with sauerkraut...in the crockpot. Anything else I should throw in there?

I'm planning on making potatoes later.

Also, the pork is still frozen...I have the crockpot on low. Will it be done by 5 or 6 tonight (It's 8 a.m. now)?

That is so weird that you posted this. I bought my first pork roast yesterday to make today w/ sauerkraut. Im putting mine in the oven though.

But I think I read a little brown sugar.

Any time I've ever tried to do it in the oven, it NEVER seems to cook right. I figured I can't go wrong with the crockpot.

Brown sugar? Hmmmmm....

Good luck and report back later on!

If you are going to be around awhile, I would cook it on high for a couple of hours and then bring it down to low.

I always like to season mine with a little salt, a pepper blend and some garlic powder before I cook them. I also don't like mine cooked with the sauerkraut, I like it just cooked plain and then cook the sauerkraut by itself and then serve together. I know its just a personal preference thing, but I don't like how sauerkraut cooks in the crockpot. I cook my potatoes and sauerkraut together and then slice the pork roast and serve them together.

I make oven browned potatoes with my pork roast-but I don't use sauerkraut. You need a fatty roast for them to get a nice glaze on them though. They are SO good.

Powellrj has some really good suggestions that I would encourage you to follow. A normal pork roast (3-4lbs) takes 5-6hrs to cook when not frozen.

Also, if you have a bottle of Ale beer around toss that in. I just made it last week with the sauerkraut last weekend...mmmmm beer!

Add the spices too.

Ps. A side of cranberries or cransauce is also good with it and french bread.

Enjoy!

Making pork and sauerkraut too-in the crockpot-I browned it first so I deglazed the frying pan with the kraut-browns it up too. just did onion salt, garlic powder and pepper for seasoning. I agree with keeping it on high awhile-love it when the pork falls apart. Enjoy!!!

Mmmmmm, sounds so good.

I don't think it'll be done by 5 or 6 if it's still frozen and you cook it on low. I would cook it on high for a few hours, as someone else suggested. I think it normally takes about 9-10 hours on low, when it's thawed.

It must be pork roast day on the DIS! I put mine in the crockpot before I took DD to school this morning. But no sauerkraut for us; I'm going to shred it, drown it in BBQ sauce, and serve it over Texas toast. Mmm!

I don't know what kind of crocks you ladies have, but 10 hrs in the crock (8 to 6) would be MORE than enough in mine, even for a frozen roast...unless that puppy is over 5 lbs!

And brown sugar?!?!? :eeek: Yuck! LOL I like my sauerkraut sour! :lmao: I know many people prefer it less so - in fact it's very hard to get good sour sauerkraut anymore. :( There are places in Lancaster County (PA Dutch country) that serve it with brown sugar & apples mixed in, but that's not for me.

The only thing other than the sauerkraut & pork that we put in is a package of hot dogs. As a kid I never liked the pork (Mom always bought stuff that was too fatty for my taste) and I got used to it. They're always nice to have the next day for lunch. ;)

The roast is 1.94 lbs. I actually took it out of the freezer yesterday afternoon and put it in the fridge but it was still frozen this morning. I had it on low from 7:30 til about 9. Turned it up to high around 9 when I saw that post and then just turned it back to low around 11.

I seasoned with salt, pepper and some "pork rub" that I discovered ( :confused3 ) in my cabinet.

This is why I never make pork -- it never wants to cook! :)

Mix a small amount of brown sugar & a beef bullion cube in with the sauerkraut. It is very good & even peopel who hate sauerkraut will eat it. It cuts the bite a tad.

Today is the day for Pork I guess. I have a pork butt in the crock right now with a McCommick seasoning pack for pulled pork.

Yummmy!!

you need some brown sugar and applesauce mixed in with the sauerkraut:banana: trust me

Any pork updates? :goodvibes I put mine in the oven at 2:30 w/ sauerkraut, sliced apples and brown sugar. The kids want potatoe pancakes on the side. So I am about to grate the potatoes now.

YUMMM!! That's what I do. DH, gets upset w/ this though. Mine at times, has been more sweet, than sauer.

I've decided I just don't like pork. Or maybe I just don't like crockpot cooking. The pork was very very very dry -- stringy -- which is how everything I cook in the crockpot seems to come out. Thank God for applesauce and the sauerkraut.

Mmmmm, potato pancakes. I haven't had them in YEARS because I can't stand the mess to make them. Let me know next time you make them, I'll be up!

I have never heard of pork roast and kraut. Sausage and kraut yes.

I cook a pork roast on low until it literally falls apart. Then add bar b q sauce for quick bbq sandwiches.

Manischewitz potato pancake mix...found in the Jewish foods section. Yummy and quick!

Noooooo...that's cheating. If you don't make your entire kitchen a mess with the potatoes, eggs, onions, etc., it doesn't count!

My family doesn't grate the potates, they get blended in the blender with the other ingredients and then fried. Man are they good.
