This will be my 1st stay at POR (going in 2 weeks). My only absolute requirement is non-smoking. I'd appreciate any advice on which section to request - AB or MB (and why?!); which building(s); and any other *tips* you can share about the resort. TIA :goodvibes

Ditto for me... except I'm staying at the French Quarter.

Any advice would be great!

Well, there really is no "best" section, but people to certainly have their favorites. The best way to figure out what yours would be is to check out the POR pictures onallearsnet.com and figure out what appeals to you the most. There is also a map on that page so you can figure out what you would like to be near. I will tell you that I prefer the mansion area, I just love the grand look of it. I also don't mind a short walk to the food court, and we always rent a car, so being near the busses is not an issue. Have fun deciding!

Make sure that you have a note on your reservation that you requested non-smoking. We've stayed at POR and POFQ many, many times and that is my big request, too. Cigarette and cigar smoke set off migraine headaches for me and it's just awful. I believe there are a couple of buildings (Building 5 at POFQ? and one of the mansions at POR) that have smoking designated floors. I would avoid those at all costs. I think the www.wdwinfo.com info on resorts says where smoking is designated.

We stayed in the Magnolia Terrace and all we did is walk down the back steps and the bus stop was right there. It was gorgeous and looked like a big antebellum home. It was a quick walk to the food court and beautiful scenery to keep you entertained. Just don't get lost!! My dh and I had that unforunate experience one night and walked and walked and walked until I thought we were going to never find our place. I know our room was a nonsmoking because I don't stay in smoking rooms if I can help it due to asthma problems. Have a great trip.

I can only give you my 2 cents concerning Alligator Bayou. We've stayed there twice in Building 14, it's the closest to the main building-food court, check in, store, bus stops!

Enjoy

Are the rooms in that building considered "preferred" and therefore cost extra $$ per night?

We stayed in Bldg. 24 in '99 and in Acadian House in January. Both sections are nice. I prefer the AB while my DW prefers the Mansions. We also stayed in Bldg. 5 of POFQ in '03. We always request a non-smoking room and we never had a problem until our January trip. There were a couple mornings when our room reeked of cigarette smoke when we returned after breakfast. There was also someone who would smoke outside of their room, which was near ours. The CM at the front desk tried to help by leaving messages on the phones of the rooms surrounding ours explaning it is a non-smoking section. It didn't seem to help but it was only the last couple mornings of our trip so it wasn't too bad. I don't know if people do not realize there are non-smoking sections or if some people just don't care.
Aside from that, this is one of our favorite resorts at WDW. We would definitely stay there again.
I don't think there are any "preferred rooms", per se. You do pay extra for the "view", though. And we paid $10/night extra for a room with a King bed in Acadian House. We got it in January for $110/night, including taxes.
BTW, don't miss Bob "the Piano Man" Jackson in the River Roost Lounge! :cool1:

Another vote for Magnolia Terrace. We loved our room location. Short walk to everything. Very quiet. We had a corner room overlooking the rose garden. I actually overshot the bus stop one afternoon when walking to it. It looked farther away on the map. I had to backtrack. It was really close and convenient. We are requesting MT again in August. It is a non-smoking building. There is also a quiet pool next to it with laundry facility if you need it. It was just a great location.

Well, I think it all depends on your tastes...my family loves the AB section..it is rustic and that is what we like. We stayed in building 14 and 28 and those are our two favorite buildings!!

Good Luck..I know you will enjoy it no matter where you end up..you will be at WDW!!!! :cool1:

Hey! My family LOVES the AB section. To us....it is just liking stepping into a Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn novel. The kids love staying on the first floor because they sit on the lawn and catch lizards! :p Building 27 is our favorite building. The AB also has trundle beds. My oldest likes to pull it out and just sit on it to watch TV. :teeth:

We love POR AB but the masions aren't an option for us since 5 of us go. I asked for Bldg 14 but we got 16 and it was nice and close too, plus there is a quiet pool there. Don't miss the breakfasts at Boatwrights...mmm mmm Blueprint Omlettes and Sweet Potato Pancakes

I've stayed in both sections and have found that it all depends on what mood I"m in. Bldg 35 is way towards the back of the resort, but is only about 8 minutes away from the main bldg and food court. There was a nearby bus stop. It was so peaceful and beautiful every morning walking to get my coffee from that bldg.

And we stayed in Magnolia Terrace on a different trip. Very beautiful. Very formal. The gardens and walkways were great to just amble around in. It all boils down to what you prefer...formal or laid back.

Lizzybee - it's a little known option but if you ask they will let you have 5 in the Mansions section. Last year they would bring in a rollaway bed, I'm not sure if they have trundles in them now or not. I know this for sure because they offered it to us at check in when I wasn't happy about the building choices for AB (second floor only - and we had a double and a single stroller to carrry!).
