POR ~ Surprise Royal Room Upgrade

To be clear, I do NOT expect pixie dust upgrades when I check in. I am so happy to be going to my favorite resort
My question is to see how realistic a dream my heart makes while I'm fast asleep is

So then, has anyone had a free pixie dust Royal Room upgrade before?
If so, when and what was your original room purchase?

For anyone curious; we have a garden view for 2 adults booked 9/9-13/16

Well, it sure would be nice, wouldn't it. But, I would imagine that if you got an upgrade, it would be to a pool view room, not a RR. There are fewer of those rooms available to begin with. I would keep watching the room rates. I was actually able to snag a RR for less than a pool view room because it was about a month prior to my trip. I moved over from Pop to POR in a RR and it was only about an addtl $150 for the two nights we were there!! There were no pool view rooms left and the RRs were cheaper than I had ever seen them. I would check the room rates daily and see if you can upgrade for not very much. That way you would know you were getting the RR.

We got one a couple years ago. We had a standard room upgraded to Royal. Parking lot view and first floor, which was actually fabulous because we had a car and somehow it was a shorter walk to the lobby and food because we didn't have to backtrack to get to or from stairs. We were there for TOT 2013 run and it was also nice to not have to climb stairs after the run.

We got that exact upgrade on our first trip in 2014!! We had a garden view booked, and when we got there they upgraded us to a Royal Room! I can't remember exactly what pixie dust I asked for when I faxed in my room request, but they weren't able to make it happen. But we got a Royal Room which was even better!
I hope you are able to get your pixie dust, POR is beautiful and their room assignment team is fantastic!
We're tacking on 2 extra days to our next trip (staying at the Poly) just to have a couple nights at POR

Strictly out of curiosity, are there just not royal rooms available to book? Because in the grand scheme of things, the price difference is negligible. If your heart is really set on those rooms, just book it ahead of time. That's the best way to avoid disappointment.

I always book what I want. Black clouds follow me on vacation. Best to have an umbrella. Then you will have the room you want.

We weren't looking to book a royal room when we booked our trip, nor did we ask for one in our room request. I think all that we asked for was "close to main buildings". It was just some nice pixie dust they added once we got there!

In Nov/Dec 2014, we were upgraded from RR Standard View to RR Garden Room- both my room and my traveling party. Our original room was in the back of Parterre Place and I kindly asked if there were rooms a little bit closer to the main buildings. They granted the dream and wish my heart made.

We did not book a RR because it was a large price gap. We have the Disney EBPC just before, as is.
Again, I am very happy to have enough to stay at my favorite resort and will be happy with AB or MB placement, I am just gathering stats. Would I like to be pixie dusted? Yes. Do I expect it? No. So why gather this info? Because I like information ^_^

I'm sure these stats are interesting to others as well

These are not stats. These stories are just that, anecdotes of upgrades that are few and far between. I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but it can be a let down when you read about the magical upgrades that happen to peole, and then you check in and you get what you paid for.

But if you want to treat this like a statistical problem, look at the number of members and then look at the number of upgrade stories...and you get the picture? Years ago, I was plannign our first trip back since my own children were young, and my how things had changed. We booked AKL and so I started looking at all AAKL had to offer. ANd boy, those upgrades to CL were awesome!!! Maybe we would be granted that Pixie Dust too!!!! Well, I was pouring over the boards, and posters kept warning...book what you want....upgrades happen, but not with the frequency the posts seem to indicate. People post the good, but why post that you got what you booked? So I upgraded our rooms to CL, and was glad I did!

AS much as it is fun hope for upgrades to happen, and I am no exception.... My family spent over a week wandering around the World during the Million Dreams hoping we would get that Cinderella Castle night. We did not.

When people read about all the Pixie Dust others have been granted it looks like there are more upgrades than there really are. You may understand this but Many of us feel compelled to dispel the illusion that they are granted often. Some folks are really let down, and we try to help make sure that does not happen.

Yes. I only wanted stats. As stated I am fully aware not to expect anything. I already said this multiple times. It also has been stated plenty by other people.

It's sad to try to gather stats for information and not able to gather any. I'm an Anthropologist and am used to gathering info. That is all this thread serves. By your reasoning, we should not ask about the magic Disney gives. I understand and I'm sure anyone reading through the thread gets it, again, it's been stated multiple times by multiple people already, before your post.

Throughout this whole forum there are threads that are lists of upgrades, particularly the DCL thread. Also the same type where asking for upgrade availability, stats and pixie dusting.

Alrighty then. You want stats. It seems to me that based on this thread the stats say that not too many people have been upgraded in RR.

We've been downgraded 3 times.

All Star Sports - Booked and paid for Preferred Room. Checked in, no mention was made that we were downgraded to a Standard Room and therefore, no mention of a refund of the difference. Got to our room (lesson learned to pay more attention at the Front Desk as to where our room is) and realized we were definitely NOT in a Preferred Room. Went back to the Front Desk and had to fight with the CM a little bit to get a Manager involved to approve the refund of the difference. The Front Desk CM tried to tell me that we DID get a Preferred room. Since our room was on the backside of Center Court I was extremely confident we were in a Standard room. Once the Manager came out, we were refunded the difference and given 5 anytime/any ride Fast Passes each.

Beach Club - Booked and paid for a Water View Room got a room with a view of a roof top facing away from any type of water. At least this time we were told at Check In that they had to downgrade us and our CC was already refunded the difference.

POR - Booked and paid for Water View and were downgraded to a Standard Room. I knew at the Front Desk from the map that we were in a Standard Room and asked if we were downgraded. CM tried to say we weren't and therefore would not refund us the difference. Again had to get a Manager out to agree with me that we were indeed downgraded to a Standard Room and would process a refund.

I know you asked for @HopperFan experience, but that is our stories.
