Almost a year ago to the day, I was fortunate to have stayed at POR-Riverside. I have been traveling to Disney World for over 30 years and have visited the parks at least 30 x’s and have stayed at almost every Disney resort at least once. Additionally, I have stayed at many of the local hotels surrounding the theme parks. I have stayed at POR-FQ several times and for some reason I just never found the former “Dixie Landings” to be appealing at that time in my life, but that all changed last year.

I attended DAP in 2009 and I enjoyed the parks at that time of year with the Christmas decorations up and without the tremendous crowds, like I experienced when I travelled the holiday week between Christmas through New Years Eve for several consecutive years. While the weather can be mercurial in December, last year, unlike in 2009, the sun was out for most of my 4 day 3 nite visit to WDW.

Last year, I made the conscience decision to break my pattern of predictable stays at my usual resorts (CBR, POR-FQ and occasionally the Poly) and decided to take the plunge to visit POR-Riverside. After my visit last year, I was totally sold on this resort and has quickly become my favorite. While the resort cannot claim to have the largest and greatest number of pools, high-end restaurants, a spa and other amenities which may be appealing to many, it can tout being the most serene. What this resort offers, is quite frankly a simple elegant charm that has an understated tranquility that I have not seen in any other resort. This resort is an oasis away from the frantic theme parks and you look forward to its peace and quiet at the end of the day. I stayed last year in a room located within the Magnolia Bend vicinity, just across from the Sassagoula River, with a wonderful view of the Boatwright’s Dining Hall.

In the morning, I enjoyed walking from the room, seeing the joggers pass me by and making me feel guilty that I should also be running, but walking is good enough for exercise during my couple day’s respite. As you walk towards the food court in the morning, you smell the natural scents of the great outdoors, you see gazebos with nice flowers and then your attention immediately focuses on your first cup of coffee and a big high calorie breakfast to start your day off on the correct nutritious food. At nighttime you have to see Yehaa Bob because he is an excellent musician and very entertaining. While the food court is by no means fine dining cuisine, the combination of pizza along with an Abita Amber is the perfect combination for a fun evening.

I will be attending DAP2 in approximately two weeks and fortunate enough to have secured a room at POR - Riverside, unlike when I attended the opening weekend of F&W and the Disney Haunted Mansion Merchandising event when I stayed at CBR, because POR-Riverside was apparently sold out.

Here are a few photos I think you will enjoy . . .

Thank you for the pictures!
They are both beautiful and inspiring.

Our first visit to WDW we stayed at French Quarter and loved it.
The next two visits and our upcoming stay are at Pop.

If I can find an extra $500 I can upgrade to Port Orleans FQ or RS.
This is an internal struggle for me.
Is it worth the extra to enjoy the room differences?

I can enjoy the common areas (grounds, restaurants - not the pool)
and still sleep at Pop. But somehow I never do. The pull towards the parks is always to strong.

I dream about a Deluxe trip someday.
I've eaten at the Poly & the Grand - but Wilderness Lodge is high on my list.

We just returned from 3 nights in Vegas.
Bellagio & Venetian were very reasonable around $150 per night.
We stayed at Paris for $50 and ate ourselves silly. Best meal: Mon Ami Gabi

With $500 I can return to Vegas *or* upgrade our WDW hotel.
The struggle continues...

Great photos! Thanks so much for sharing.

Great photos! We love POR- riverside. We stayed at French quarter once but like this instead. It reminds me of the "South."

Cannot wait to stay there in LESS THAN 2 WEEKS!!!!!

Ken,

What a lovely, thoughtful comment on POR...and beautiful photos as well. I hope I get to meet you at DAP.

That is my favorite moderate resort. I think the landscaping is incredible and one of the gems that make this resort feel more upscale than a value or other moderates.

I've only stayed in the Bayou section and love it there.
