I must say this resort has a 'deluxe' feel to it, from the lobby decor to the lush foliage surrounding the bldgs. I would almost liken it to the Polynesian. The rooms were clean, the CM's helpful and the atmosphere was so peaceful. I can understand why people like this place so much. It's definitely one of those resorts where you need more than a few days to fully appreciate it.

We stayed in AB bldg #15, room #1556 upstairs. It was a bit confusing finding our room in the dark as we checked in a little later than we hoped. We were so hungry that we decided to eat first too. That might not have been the best idea seeing that we really didn't know our way around this place.

We followed the path out the back doors of the food court and asked for some assistance from a fellow Red Sox fan as to the location of bldg #15. We headed down a winding path past a parking lot and onto the walkway of bldg #15. After circling the downstairs a couple of times trying to figure out the number system, we took a set of stairs that was nearby. Mind you it was just me and the kids as DH was in the lounge watching the precious game 7! We finally came across our room in the middle of the bldg facing a small courtyard. it was on the corner of a 4 way intersection, two of which led directly to stairs down toward the parking lot! Now where were those stairs earlier? I unloaded the van myself, DH joining me later to get the last few things.

The AB section is laid out much like CBR only the landscaping is so thick that you can't just step off the walkways any old place. There are little paths through the bushes in some places that people must have cut through over time. You also can't see over to the next bldg or pool due to the trees and shrubs. That must be why this place is so quiet, built in insulation!

I took the kids to the quiet pool the first night but it was a little cold for me, not sure if this pool was supposed to be heated or not. The kids had a fine time and met another family of kids their age.

We didn't get to spend much time at the resort in our 4 short days there but we managed to eat dinner at Boatwright's, breakfast at the food court, visit the main pool and slide and take the boat to DTD which was wonderful!

Although this was one resort I always thought would be last on my list due to it's large size and location (and indeed it is one of the last 5 or 6), I enjoyed our stay here and would definitley return, probably to the mansions next time for a little variety.

I also want to add that thanks to some advice here on this board, we tipped daily and were delighted to receive our first towel animals, 3 in all! Not sure if it was the tipping or the great mousekeeping staff here at this resort that clinched it for us but we will always have great memories of this place!

Our first stay at POR (and the world!) last June(Oak Manor....try the mansions, they are awesome!), we tipped and received towel animals at least 5 times during our 10 day stay. That must say something about the mousekeeping folks there!:)

Its so nice to see good reviews...we are going for 1st time and all I read is how dirty POR is. I sure look forward to our stay and any more tips you have are greatly appreciated, like is the restaurant there any good? How about the buses?

Glad to hear you enjoyed POR

I agree that the themeing makes it feel like a deluxe resort. I was just there in Sept and stayed in Oak Manor. I really enjoyed the resort, the boat to DTD is really a neat perk.

Thanks for posting the positive words!

Like several other board members, I'm soon to embark on my first visit to POR, and I've read a few semi-negative things here and there. So every time I read about a great experience like yours, it boosts my confidence, and let's me know that yes, I made the right decision!

Thanks for the positive review. My tribe is planning a trip in June & hope to stay at POR. It's reassureing to hear good reviews about our destination. I can't wait.

like is the restaurant there any good? How about the buses?

Yes, I thought the restaurant was very good. We wanted to have breakfast here as well but there was just not enough time! It reminds me a little of Cracker Barrel but nicer.
The buses were standing room only since we used the South Depot and the parks were crowded this past weekend. As the last stop on and the first stop off, I think they were quick and efficient. We never waited more than 10 min for a bus to our respective park but we drove to Typhoon Lagoon.

Definitely take the boat to DTD! It is so peaceful and relaxing. You get a back side view of the PI and such which is a rare treat! Also, note the treehouse villas along the way, empty but interesting!

We stayed at POR our first WDW trip and we loved it! We stayed in Magnolia Terrace and had a corner room (2 windows). We thought the room was pretty. Our DD's (only had 2 at that time) loved it also. The walk to the main building was really pretty, we loved the quiet, beautiful grounds. The Water taxi to DTD was really fun, and also renting the surrey bikes. The food court was pretty good, but watch out for moldy fruit! Now we have a 3rd DD so we have moved to Deluxes, but POR will always be one of our favorites.

IandGsmom, don't worry at all - I tend to notice tiny details (maybe a little too much, lol!) and there was no dirt, nothing out of place at all at the POR. We stayed there last fall, and so highly recommended it that my sister is there next week. I can't imagine a poor review, unless it is a really freak occurance type of thing, because my neighbors stayed there too and also loved it.

Boatwrights is fantastic, especially for dinner if you like creole type food, as I do. The jambalaya is wonderful! My three kids all found great things to eat, and for breakfast, those giant buns can't be beat!

Have a great time, and relax. I think that's what is so nice about POR - you can truly take the time to sit on the porch by the pool, in a rocker, maybe with a glass of wine, and RELAX!

Melissa

Thank you for your review. I am just trying to decide if I should switch to the Dolphin for our December stay. You made up my mind to stick with POR. Thanks

POR is my daughter's choice over other resorts. DD and DS had a great time there last Christmas and we are looking forward to returning again this year.

Regarding negative comments: I have read and seen negative things about the Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Poly, Beach Club Villas, Wilderness Lodge, etc. There will always be people who notice the one negative while ignoring the ten positives. Overall, Disney resorts are among the best in the country.

POR is a deluxe (almost) at a moderate price. An outstanding staff and great rate make this a favorite among Disney goers who know better.

Enjoy your stay!

Peace,

Port Orleans Riverside ( aka Dixie Landings ) was our first Disney resort , and to this day remains one of our favorites. As a matter of fact, one of the reasons we later purchased DVC sight-unseen was our pleasant experiences at this resort. We knew that of the moderates were this good, the home-away-from-home resorts must be exceptional ! It was , and they are !

As many others have said, this resort is a moderate with a deluxe feel. For example, you have multiple pools, counter-service & sit-down restaurants, one of the best resort store areas. For recreation, you have regular & surrey bikes, several different types of water-craft, a catch & release fishing area, and the boat to Downtown Disney. In addition, they have recently added the carriage rides - something that I don't believe that any of the deluxe resorts offer.

Once there you will be drawn in by the quiet charm of the resort, with the award winning landscaping, the many ducks and rabbits, and that massive water-wheel. This place is just sooo relaxing. To be honest, we often find ourselves visiting there even when staying at other resorts. This has to be one of the best values that Disney offers !

It is wonderful to see all these great reviews!! We have stayed at many of the Disney resorts but not POR. We are looking forward to our stay there the second week of December. Thanks for the info!

Which part of POR will be closed for rehab next August...Riverside or French Quarter?
