Does anyone have or know where I can find a map of POR online? I was hoping I'd find one on allears, but alas no luck.

Thanks again.

Now here's my next question, presuming you have stayed at POR: They say that every room is only a 3-4 minute walk from a bus stop, and it seems that the stops are labelled on the maps as the depots. Is that true? Because looking at the maps, it looks like that's much more than a 3-4 minute walk. Or do buses stop at the circles in front of each group of buildings.

This is an extremely important question for my party because my best friend is a diabetic. While he isn't handicapped, walking can be a severe pain that can keep him in his room if his feet get too blistered (he always rents a wheelchair at the parks, but getting to the parks he prefers to walk).

Yes the walk to the bus stops are about really anywhere between 3 to 10 min. walk depending on where your room is. Please Fax the hotel 3-4 days before you arrive and state your problem and they will try and give you a room close to a bus stop. I would also ask for one close to main building. I know bldg. 14 is close to both.

I timed the walks after all the horror stories I'd heard - from the main reception to the furthest buildings is around 10 minutes. In fact, it's probably less as it only takes 10 minutes to walk to the French Quarter. Honestly, it's not too bad wherever you are; however, if you are looking for the closest buildings to the main (South) depot, ask for Alligator Bayou 14 or 18. However, note that 18 is smoking (not too sure about 14).

The South Depot is the main one, but you will only be minutes away from the others if your building is further away.

We stayed in Bldg 16 at our last trip and it was a wonderful location, from either way it was just a couple of minutes from the food court or main bus depot, there was also a quiet pool just around the corner. It is a bit of a walk to Ole Man Island, maybe 5-7 mins depending on how sore your feet are and how motivated to get there you are (for a 7 yr old dying to get to the pool it may only be 3 mins ;) ). Once you are there, it's a lovely pool with a hot tub too. If you are close to the main bldg and walking is an issue more than time, you can also just grab the boat over to POFQ and the boat dock is super close to their pool and hot tub. Hope that helps!

Call special services. We did for pretty much the same reason...two members of our party needed to be close to a bus stop. We got building 15, parking lot view, which was very close to a pool, the South Depot and the main building. It was SO nice. The other two times we were there we were in the furthest buildings we could have gotten and the walks seemed so far away!

Also Port Orleans French Quarter is much smaller and the first to load the buses. On the disabilities board they mentioned a site where your could rent an electric wheelchair for a very good price and it will be delivered and picked up at you resort. He would have use of it every where then. Please please tell him to be careful, my own father had severe diabetes and got blisters on his right foot which caused him to have two toes amputated. So look into the electric chair for him. Also disney has a special disabilities phone # to call and they can guarantee certain types of rooms for your party. Just call the main # and ask for the number or look on the disabilities section on this site.

We've done Disney twice now with him renting wheelchairs just at the parks and that seems to work the best. There are times when being on his feet is best, whether needing to stretch his legs or if we have to run for a connection. He's in good enough shape, and I think would feel bad taking the facilities meant for someone truly disabled when he isn't. The electric wheelchairs are pretty slow, also and I like the exercise of pushing him around. ;)

Thanks for your concern though! :)

Would you suggest then switching the reservation from POR to POFQ?

What they rent in the parks and the off-site medical equipment companies are not actually electric wheelchairs, they are power scooters (also called ecvs) . The ones you rent in the parks are set to have a fairly slow top speed.
ECVs are steered by a set of handlebars (kind of like a bike) that also includes a throttle for the speed.

Power wheelchairs are not for rent in the parks. They are very expensive and are driven with a joystick that controls a computer that determines which wheel to send power to and how much power to send. The controller is individually programmed fro the person who will be using it. My DD's maximum speed is set to only 60% of the wheelchair's maximum speed, but she can go fast enough that I have to run to keep up (and I am a fast walker).

After looking at the map of POFQ, we decided we could switch resorts and still not go with the wheelchairs or scooters. The CM who took my call also asked if she should forward my call to the wheelchair providers, but I told her we should be fine without a full-time wheelchair. If John's feet start hurting, we can always rent one once we are there. He enjoys to walk when he can, but excessive walking and standing in lines is where he really runs into problems... Things which don't look like they will be much of an issue at FQ.

We've stayed at building 8 at ASMu (one of the Broadway Buldings) and he was able to walk to and from the main building with little or no problem there. It looks like FQ isn't nearly as big so I think he'll be fine.

Thanks again for all your help and concern.
