My husband and I checked our of the POR yesterday with inflamed insect bite marks from the top of our feet to our mid-calves as well as various spots elsewhere. Almost looks like mosquito bites, and feels like them too.

We both started noticing possible bite marks three days into our five day stay but did not think anything of it until they were much worse by check-out time.

Concerned that our room had bed bugs and needs treatment, I went through an awfully lengthy process of getting a hold of some sort of resort supervisor or manager.

After finally getting a hold of a supervisor,we were asked to meet the hotel manager, housekeeping, and pest control back at our room. We kindly obliged and waited at least an hour, nobody came. We left a note as we left for MK to finish our vacay.

THREE hours later the hotel manager called and said that they just went to the room and found no evidence of bed bugs and suggested that both my husband and I have rashes from the chemicals that they wash their linens in.

The manager advised us to call a week before our next stay to have our linens go through a special wash.

 I am not convinced that it is a chemical allergy and of course I am not positive that they are bed bugs.

Psh.... I have a large tub of cortisone cream next to me and it is time for another application :(

My son ALWAYS gets the red bites on his legs from midcalf down to his ankles each year we go to Disney. I share a bed with him and I don't get them, so I know its not something in the bed.

I never once thought it was the linens since he sleeps with the sheets over his head and I would think the marks would be everywhere. :confused3

I happened upon a thread the other day titled "the disney rash". Maybe it's something similar?

It could have been bed bugs. Unfortunately, being that you are now out of the room it is impossible to tell. Unless you carried some home with you, which I hope is not the case!!

This is a great minder to everyone to do a bed check no matter what resort/hotel you are at. Pull back the covers, pull the edge of the mattress back. Look behind the headboard..etc. If you know they are there, you can tell the management. If they don't believe you, you can take them up to the room, show them, and then ask them to get in bed if they still don't believe you.

It will help out your fellow disers as well as yourself.

I hope you stop itching soon!

Also Golfer's Vasculitis could be another cause.

Anything is possible, but bed bugs are probably one of the lesser likely causes.

There was just a post last week with a citation from one of the Orlando TV stations about how Disney is using specially trained dogs now to look for bed bugs, so they are pretty proactive about it, and I've heard very responsive in the cases where they were found at a resort.

On alot of Disney vacations I have had the same problem. I have thought of so many things it could be. I get the rash on the back of my legs and on the front of my arms. I do believe it could be the sun. I am the only one to get it. DH and I are in the same bed, so I ruled out any kind of bugs. I did think it could be the washing of the linens on the beds. I have brought my own linens to use or have washed them with my own detergent I bring the minute I get there. We stay at DVC rooms. I have gotten it on trips in the summer and trips in January. We were there in Oct and I was ok, with no washing of linens. I will be back in February so I hope I am ok.
We live in Pa. so there is no chance to get any sun before I go to help me get used to it.
It is terribly itchy and you can't stop scratching. I have not gotten it in quite awhile. I hope I don't get it again. I am on alot of medicines for my rhematoid arthritis so I always thought it could contribute to it. I have a cortisone cream prescription and an antiboticic cream to put on it. I think it just runs it course. If we are gone for 10 days it usually ends once I get home.
Glad to have the information about it. Thanks.

I have seen Polymorphous Light Eruption look like anything from a full rash to what looks like insect like bites. This also seems quite common at Disney due to all the concrete and light reflections, especially when it comes to cases of the legs being the main body part effected.

If your room was checked, then it is about 100% that you don't have bedbugs. They are very easy to find evidence of and they also usually like to start on your upper body(back and torso). I get the "Disney funk" *every* time I go. No one else in my family does. It starts on the tops of my feet and goes up my calf eventually. It is itchy and yucka and promptly goes away a few days after I am home.

ETA: My rash looks exactly like multiple insect bites...heaps of them.

This is a possibility. I am in the sunlight often though so I am not so sure.

Ugh! It is possible that I will never know what the rashes/bites are from. I am not upset with Disney over it, although I am slightly disturbed over the way my concern was handled. This was the only real kink in our fabulous visit so I am not overly upset. Just a warning to pack cortisone cream when you visit!

I have to ask, what was wrong with the way it was handled? You contacted Disney, someone went to your room and checked it out for you.:confused3 They shouldn't have left you waiting for thm, but other than that I think they did what they should have. At least you knew enough to leave them a note and go on enjoying your vacation. That was a positive, right?

did they request that you wait in the room for them? IF they did and then it took an hour for them to get there I would have been upset about it. If they just said they'd send someone by to check it out I would have left as you eventually did. I'm not sure it was mishandled by them - it's not as if it was an emergency and someone would need to come immediately.

I get the red bumpy rash also. I think its from the reflection of the sun off the blacktop.

I am surprised to see so many posts saying they get the rash too - I have never experienced this nor have I heard of it before.

We had a bedbugs at Pop a few years ago. Let me tell you these bites were 1/4" in size then welted to over an 1" albeit my kid was scratching them. Day 1 they were on my neck and his face, day 2 my stomach and his as well as hubby's legs. Day 3 we went to the staff and got it checked out. They took all our stuff and sterilized it, bought us a new outfit each and refunded us the 2 nights of the bed bug room and gave us another room. It was horrible all our pictures were ruined and a whole day was lost. My son now calls disney hotels the bug place :rotfl:

I think they are great at checking for bugs and had you stayed you would have known for sure but I doubt if it was bedbugs they would tell you after the fact. Hope you stop itching soon take benadril thats was we did.

What are chiggers?

What is a chigger and what is the treatment for a chigger bite? A chigger is a very tiny red parasitic larva of the harvest or scrub mite (also known as red mite) and is a threat to birds, reptiles, and a variety of mammals including humans. The nymph and adult form of the harvest mite are generally not a problem for humans. However, it is the larvae or chiggers that cause skin and health problems. A chigger is not an insect but rather an arachnid and therefore part of the spider family.

Chiggers are found in grassy fields, berry patches, along lakes, creeks, and streams, and in forests. Any damp area with a lot of vegetation is a prime area for a chigger. When a chigger hatches it tends to migrate to tall grass or other vegetation, which makes it easier to jump onto its victim. Early autumn and late summer is the most likely time for a chigger bite and the need for a treatment for chigger bite.

Symptoms of Chigger Bites
While the flea bites and inserts the feeding tube into the host's skin, specific chigger bite symptoms are not easily visible or detected. Once it begins to feed from the tube and inject the digestive enzymes inside the skin, that's when the chigger bite symptoms can be noticed. The typical symptoms include:

* Itching is one of the most common chigger bites symptoms since it injects saliva inside the body to make the blood thin and easy to suck.
* Couple of days past the first bite, itching becomes intense which can take about 2 weeks to become normal.
* The skin turns red in color and looks like a blister or pimple; it could either be raised or flat.
* The infected area has bumps, welts, or appearance of hives. Also the bumps can increase in size.
* If the bite is not treated soon, the chigger can feed for a long time and the feeding tube can pierce deeper into the skin.

Okay I'm freakin' out! We're staying at Port Orleans Riverside-is that "POR"? Do you look for black spots on the box spring? Is that how you check? I do not want to share a bed with bedbugs-unles they're paying!!

See, this is why I dislike threads like this. The op did not have bedbugs and her room was thoroughly checked. Not sure why you would title a thread "bed bugs (or whatever)". It just stirs people up. That said, we always check our hotel room for bugs. It's just a given. Bring a small flashlight, check the mattress for spots, as well as the corners and grooves of the mattresses. :thumbsup2
