Someone said that the POR was a 10 minute drive to the parks? If this is true would you be better off to drive your own vehicle into the park? If you have to wait 20 minutes for the bus plus a 10 minute drive I think you would be ahead to drive yourself. Is their a parking fee if you are staying at a park resort? I guess I just can't imagine it being a 10 min. drive :confused3

It *might* be, but then you have to park and walk or take a parking lot tram to the font, if you are going to MK, you'll have to park at TTC and take the monorail or boat.

It probably works out faster if you take the busses. :)

You could call POR a ten minute drive from the MK and other parks, but let's use the MK as an example.

Ten minutes from the time you leave your room to the MK parking lot.

THEN:
A minute or so to walk to the tram.
A few minutes to wait for the tram to pull up and load.
A few minutes on the tram to ride to the TTC.
A few minutes to walk to the monorail or ferry.
A few minutes (or more) to wait for the next monorail or ferry.
A five minute or so ride on the monorial or ferry to the main gate of the MK.

If you take the POR bus you will skip all of those steps.

Good luck!

If you are staying at a Disney resort you do get free parking at the parks.
We always drive ourselves, because we don't like waiting for busses in the hot summer heat. We also like being able to leave the Disney grounds for other dining options :teeth: The only time we even consider the bus is for MK, because you bypass TTC.

This is a good point for the MK only. You don't ever want to drive to the MK, because you can't actually park there. But as far as the other three parks go, you may as well drive there if you have a car. It will be faster, parking is free, and your options are wide open if you want to go anywhere from there.

I think it depends on the time of year you go. We were there in January and parked close enough to the TTC that we didn't need to wait for a tram. We got the first monorail over one day and the first ferry the next. The only time we took a tram was at MGM and that was only because we arrived at about 4:00 and they were making people park at the back of the lot. We passed tons of empty spots up close as we passed on the tram.

The actual driving time from POR was 10 minutes to AKL and I think that was the farthest. Again, it was pretty early in the AM in January. I'm sure it's different in June!

I drive everywhere. I refuse to drive to MK. I don't like dealing with either that monorial or the boat. They take FOREVER! At least once you are on the bus you are going!

wow i didn't know you get free parking if you stay at a resort. do you just show them your room key at the gate or does the resort give you something to put on your car.thank you weluvpluto.

You get a parking pass that you display in your car window that allows you free parking for the days you are a resort guest.

Not to sound snarky, but am I the only one that thinks 10 min. is nothing? Maybe because it takes me more than that to do anything near my home (and I live near EVERYTHING within a few miles), that I think 10 minutes is not a huge amount of time at all.

Maybe I'm missing something, but we are just talking about a total of 10 minutes right? When I'm on vacation, I'm all about convenience and the buses are where it's at. We went in early May, a pretty busy time of year, and rarely had a long wait for the bus or while on the bus. The airconditioned bus stop to gate service is well worth the additional...5 minutes (?) JMHO

We were just at POR and if you say the bus ride is 10 minutes, I'll believe you, because it felt like 5 minutes.

I've never ever had to stand in my car while driving to and from the parks. I can also grab a smoke and a cold drink from my little cooler I carry with me. If it's not the MK, I'm driving.

thank you weluvpluto and DissyLove for letting me know about the parking pass. that's a nice money saver.

The Disney transportation system is faster to MGM, and Epcot, and MUCH faster to MK because you can't park at MK, you have to go to the transportation hub.

Your own car is faster to Animal Kingdom, and MUCH better for all the water parks.

I like driving to the water parks anyway, because we typically take more stuff with us for a day (morning and early afternoon) in the water parks.

Your car will probably save you about 10 minutes each way to AK and about 15 or more to the water parks.

Driving from any resort to any park is only a matter of 10 minutes or less - from parking lot to parking lot.
I think what you have to factor in is:
~ which park (MK is absolutely better on Disney transportation) and waterparks we always drive with our gear
~ are you getting there early (therefore a better parking spot and quick hop into the park)
~ do you want to park hop, get to a PS or take a QUICK hotel break (huge difference in time it will take)
~ will you be there at closing (when transportation is at it's slowest)
~ do you have lots of gear (strollers or even wheelchair, do you have the time to wait on special bus?)

We find while we do ride transportation some, we drive to all but MK....but even that we drove to last trip because we wanted to go by sports complex first for our race numbers.... And we always keep extra clothes (in case of rain) and a cooler with drinks & snacks (for our in between location snack) in the car.

It's great that you can go to Disney without a car but if you have one, you may want to try using it on days you have multiple things planned.

BTW, anybody else feel safer strapping their small children into a car seat, then just taking your chances on a bus?

I find the bus drivers very safe and considerate of their littlest, most precious cargo. While buses are awkward, they are very good at making smooth turns and don't slam the breaks on. Several seats are lateral instead of forward facing, which also helps keep the real little ones steadier.

Hey Boston Rob, what's the only thing greater than the happiest place on earth (Disney)? The Red Sox winning the World Series AT YANKEE STADIUM!!!
