I was going to plant some in my backyard for a wind break and the nice looking young man at the nursery siad they were disease ridden, not a good idea. Anybody know anything about them?
We planted ours 7 years ago when we first moved in and finally had them removed last spring - the leaves turned yellow with brown spots for the last 3 summers, from the bottom up, just as bananeim said above (and fell off - the trees looked terrible). Landscaper says "Wow - it's a good idea to get rid of these - they're known to grow to 30 or 40 feet, then easily fall on your house" That's all I know about them. I'd try something else. The landscaper suggested Leland Cypresses - they are evergreens that start at 4 feet (usual height when you buy them). He says they are fast growers (about 2 feet per year after the first year) and will eventually get to 100 feet tall and 20 feet wide (after many years, of course). DFIL has one in his backyard which grew to about 10 feet in 3 years - it's beautiful.
There were some scattered around our old apartment complex. While their heighth is nice, their sturdiness is awful. Winds that were strong at all would break them or blow them down, and a lot of them had dead branches up in them.

Guess I will cross them off my list. Back to the nursery to talk to the nice looking young man.Oh, the horror! But I will do it for the sake of my yard.
