Pope abolishes Limbo

And I certainly apologize if it seemed like I was targeting you or anyone specifically. I am not targeting any one religion either. I only point out what the scripture says and ask anybody else to do the same when they are discussing the rationale for any Christian religious doctrine or practices.

No harm at all. Having studied the Catholic faith at the collegiate level, I can tell you that every one of our major tenets can be found in Scripture. Now, does everyone interpret Scripture in the same way? Not a chance, that's why there's a different church on nearly every block! I'm convinced that someday it will be revealed WHY there are so many interpretations, but since I'm not God I'm sure I don't know. I'm also not going to presume that I know which one is the ultimate correct interpretation that everyone on the planet should be following either.

Unfortunately, there are others who do use similar language when they are trying to point out how their way is the only way. I don't believe Catholicism is the only way for EVERYONE, but I know in my heart it is the way for me. I can see that you have found what is the way for you and that's great.

I go to a Latin Mass nearly every Sunday-and I also go to the English one at my parish a couple days a week. I went once out of pure curiosity and fell in LOVE with the beauty of the chant, the smell of the incense and the poetry of the prayers. (they have Latin-English missals in all the pews) People make a lot of fuss about the Priest not facing you, but he's facing East and we're facing East when the Eucharistic prayers are being said. Don't the Jews and Muslims face East when they pray? The Priest faces us when he's reading the Gospel and preaching on it.

My Church doesn't have a Latin Mass, but another parish in town does and I love it. I drive 30min to attend it when I'm in the mood. I actually prefer it to English Mass - it just seems more serene and spiritual to me. I think the Priest not facing the congregation is a lot less distracting for some reason.

I'm not a catholic so you'll have to forgive my idiocy here but I thought you meant the party game was being abolished and I couldn't understand why that needed to be abolished.

Glad that isn't true because we are playing limbo this weekend with some that are catholic and I freaked a little!

Ok thread hijacking over! Sorry!

I've got no special brief against Catholics, no more than any other religion, this just hit me as a story that typifies how cruel religion can be. And it's no good saying this wasn't official Catholic policy, this crap has been peddled and believed for 800 years. Someone said this was dreamed up as some sort of comfort to families that lost babies. Comfort!!! What sick mind believed that telling a bereaved parent that their stiilborn baby died a sinner and would therefore not be accepted into heaven was comforting? Madness.

That was me that posted it and it appears you didn't read my entire post. I'm neither sick nor mad thank you very much.

In that time, people believed if you were not baptised you went to Hell. What's more comforting, believing your child went to limbo which is like Purgatory, or that your child went to Hell? We are talking of people who believed the earth was flat after all, that bleeding is an excellent cure for all of your ills, etc... so you cannot think of it in a modern mindset

For example, I can't imagine Latin Masses, but many in my family certainly remember them very well
my mother goes to an early morning Latin mass also. She drives a bit for it. She doesn't believe it should ever have been changed.
There are still Churches here that do Latin masses. I'm trying to lector for one of them occasionally so I can practice speaking in Latin for my eventual language competency in Latin for my masters
I just hired a Latin tutor. I am going into my third semester of latin in the fall and would love to add that cert to my teaching credentials. My teacher is very difficult to work with though and he's the only person who teaches Latin in our area.

You misunderstand. That comment was aimed at whoever it was originally, (St Augustine?) who thought it would comfort bereaved parents to tell them that their dead baby was in limbo, not at you.
