Hi all. We took our pop up camper to disney once, but it was in April. The weather was really nice and there weren't many bugs yet. Now we are thinking about going for 10 days in August. Just how bad is it??

We are not hardy campers. We haven't camped much the last 3 years because my youngest son has health issues and asthma and didn't deal with the great outdoors well. We think he'll be ready this summer (he'll be almost 3), especially if it's disney.

We were in disney last August (between Charley and Frances  ) so we know how hot it is in the parks. I'm just wondering how hot is it *camping*. And how buggy.

So tell me, should we do it? Or should we just try and get an AP rate on a cabin or something?

Jenny

August camping weather can be a lot of things. It is hot in August. You did not say if you pop up has AC. If not the nights could be very uncomfortable. It depends how how humid it is. You could be sitting out and catch a breeze in the shade and it could be very nice. Or the air could not be moving and it's very humid and your melting in the shade. Sometimes in August you can step outside at 7 am and a meltdown can start within 10 minutes. Other times it can be quite pleasant until after 12. Usually between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. are the worse times for heat in August.

As for bugs. Well that depends on what kind of summer it's been. If it has been very rainy and humid, you can count on bugs. If it has been on the drier side, then bugs are not so bad. But there will be some bugs.

Since you have said you are not "hardy campers" than I'm not so sure you would not be better off getting a room on property. I assure you the weather in August will be nothing like April. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

August can also be a rainy month with some pretty severe afternoon storms.

Having said all that, I would not want to discourage you from staying in FW because it's August. Just come with the mindset that it's going to be different than April and be prepared to embrace whatever it is. After all you'll still be in the World!

I would say it probably depends most on whether you have A/C or not. :scared: I can't imagine spending the day in the parks, then returning to my hot camper for a sweaty night's sleep. On the other hand, one of the advantages of camping is that you can control allergens & germs better since you are using your own facilities. If you know you can be cool at night, then taking the camper might be a great decision.

My sister in law and her family spent a week at Disney in August (in a pop up). She said she was sooooo miserable. Too hot! Not too mention she was 6 months pregnant. :) She said they would never take the pop up that time of year again.

I had a popup for 7 years before buying my travel trailer and living here in Texas we know about "HOT". If you have A/C, just leave it running all day long and it will be cool inside when you get back from the parks. Without A/C I wouldn't even consider it. Also, if you don't already have these, there are solar bunkend covers that are available from http://www.popupgizmos.com that are minor miracles. They clip onto the outside of your bunk ends and reflect the sunlight off. I would say they drop the interior temperature at least 15 degrees. Well worth the money.

As to a breeze in the campground, I suggest that you bring a 20" box fan with you to keep outside. You can get one for $20 or less at any Walmart. I have a friend of mine that got PVC piping and made a misting system that he tie-wrapped to the front of his fan that worked extraordinarily well.

Have fun....

I'm a big camping fan, but with your son's health situation, I would not risk ruining your vacation. I'd spend the extra money to get a hotel.

If you have AC you will be fine.....My daughter also has asthma and for some reason it does not bother her when we are at Disney. We have camped in a pop up 3 years in a row in August and were fine, with the AC, I would NOT do it without. Also be very careful with your awning if you have one, we saw a pop up with their awning completely ripped, those thunderstorm come fast and furious....
