Pop Up Camper Awnings

Sorry to highjack your thread... there's an article in Popup Times at the link you provided about Coleman Campers closing last week. :sad2:

Tim,

I took a look at the awning and it looks neat but I have to say I would be concerned about the price and the weight. Was there something about the Colorado awnings you didn't like?

I'm holding my current awning together with bubble gum and a hammer but it won't make it much longer (this is OEM awning #2). After that I think I'll just swing over to a big 10' square easy up on some risers (it will be multi-functional).

But an interesting suggestion and thanks for sharing it.

BTW, too bad about the Coleman group shutting down. It's an old proud name that won't be in the marketplace.

Yup, they are gone again. For a little history Coleman got out of the pop up business in the late 80's. They sold everything to Fleetwood lock, stock & barrel. Fleetwood manufactured them under name license for many years, finally getting into a dispute over fees, go figure. Fleetwood continued to manufacture the exact same pop up under the Fleetwood brand. My current pop up is a Fleetwood branded unit. After a couple of years of fighting with Coleman over the name Fleetwood sold the entire business to a group who had no history with RVs. That group was able to make up with Coleman and get the name back on the pop ups. I guess that group finally figured out that just having the Coleman name won't sell pop ups. They are the ones who have thrown in the towel and shut the plant down.

The only Colorado awnings I have seen are also bag awnings. Through the years I have become disgusted with bag awnings and don't want them anymore. I agree my solution won't work for most pop up owners, probably a little too pricey. But, it worked for me.

Someone who knows something about that industry and who has money to do it will buy it. The Coleman name is just too big to just let it die. :thumbsup2

even if the old Fleetwood plant in PA never opens again I'm sure the name will come back. Coleman will just license it to Jayco, Starcraft or some other manufacturer. The name will be back but the products will probably be different. The current models/designs are the property of FTCA, not Coleman so someone will buy those designs at the bankruptcy sale.
