POP Century with ASD Child

We will be staying at Pop Century at our upcoming Disney visit. My 6 year old is on the Autism Spectrum (PDD-NOS) and I have reserved a preferred room with the request for a 'quieter' room. Any suggestions you have for me... staying at POP?

I would suggest you start by reading the "disABILTIES FAQ", especially the page related to the Guest Assistance Cards (GAC) which may help. It is difficult to make any specific recommendations as the GAC is based on need and not diagnoses; you, hopefully, are aware of the needs.

There is no such thing as a "quieter" area at any of the Value Resorts. The Preferred rooms will have you closer to the buses and food court. Very often they fill up with school groups and youth teams; especially if competitons are going on at Wide World of Sports.

I had a great quiet room the one time I stayed at All Star Music. However, if you're looking for quiet I would avoid the "preferred" rooms since they tend to be closer to all of the activity and thus all of the noise.

You could try looking at the resort maps and making requests about specific areas that don't face anything exciting.

I agree with the above post. I would check out the "resorts" board. There recently has been alot of talk about the quieter (non-preferred) sections of POP.

Thanks - I spoke with our travel agent and it looks like we are going to take a value room with a lakeview on an upper level that will hopefully be a bit less hectic.

hellokittie - I think you made the right choice of going for a lake view.
I would NOT pay for the preferred rate in this case.
The lake views at Pop are quite serene and away from the hustle and bustle. You might have a bit of a longer walk to the bus or food court, but it should be worth it for the peace it will give your child (and you! those kids in the pool can get loud!).

We stayed at Pop Century in June of '07 and the first thing my ds (9) did was tp mark his spot. He took the bedspreads off and put them on the floor between the 2nd bed and the wall and dumped his "stuff". Beware the person who touches his stuff. We were there for a week and he did pretty good. He had a better time playing in the bathtub in his bathing suit than he did at the swimming pool. If Isaac is happy, we all are happy.

We've stayed on the upper floor overlooking the lake at Pop Century. For 5 nights it was very, very quiet. Then we got neighbors who were very loud, late into the night...

So, if quiet is mandatory, I think you might not want to stay at PC. The quietest place I can think of are the Wilderness Cabins.

I don't need absolute quiet or anything Mostly I just don't want a room right in the middle of everything going on (like the pool etc)

Any other advice about staying at POP? What worked and what didn't there for your child's needs?

At Pop Century, one of the decades doesn't even have a pool, so maybe request that, with a top floor/backside of the building room?

The food court at Pop Century is connected quite openly to the very large gift shop. It can get pretty hectic and confusing in there first thing in the morning when everyone is trying to get breakfast and get to the parks. We liked to go down very early and fill our mugs with tea and coffee, buy some fruit, and eat breakfast in our room. I packed cereal, bowls and spoons in our bags.

We stayed at POP last month....had a very quiet room in the 50's section. We had paid for preferred (which I would do again!) and requested NOT a first floor room and NOT pool-side. (We got both requests). I thought it was perfect for us! (my ds7 has pdd-nos too!)

Going for trip three to POP with DS with multiple problems, including severe anxiety and panic disorder. First trip was 70's upper floor lakeview and it was great ! Close to main hub. Second trip I requested 50's upper floor lakeview, also great. I requested it because we found the bowling pin pool was much quieter and more enjoyable for my son. The main pool was so loud and just too much for him. This way we were close to pool. Facing the lake is so nice and peaceful, day and night when you pass through to back of building. These rooms are standard, so was nice to save a few extra dollars and get the plus of more peaceful area and nice view.

We stayed in room 4137 back in April/May. It's a first floor corner room facing the lake. It was very quiet. It was especially nice in the evenings when we were back at the room. The kids (3 & 5) would be sleeping and we could pull chairs out on the sidewalk and share a bottle of wine or something, yet be right there for the kids. We did not pay for a preferred room and really we were less than a 5 minute walk from the main hall.

And we had visitors every day. A couple of ducks, some little rabits and various other birds.

You do need to remember, though, that requests are not guaranteed. A Standard room can have a lake 'view', but it could also have a parking lot 'view' - amazingly quiet! - or even just face another building.
