Hello,

Here is my 2nd trip report of late. The first was a stay at AKL and the report can be found here

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1712874

Briefly, my wife and I have a 2.5 year old son so keep that in mind as you read this. We grew up in Florida so are experienced with the parks, but less so with the resorts. I have only stayed one other time at AKL. I know some people will say you cannot compare the two and that is not my intention. I am only writing my observations based on previous experiences. This is probably a bit more negative than my AKL report, because I am moving down from a deluxe to a value resort.

And so it begins...

We received a Florida resident’s discount pass for a resort, and since the dates were convenient, we chose POP Century based on the recommendations of this board and the price. This was a spur of the moment trip…reservations on Friday arrive on Sunday stay through Thursday. This will highlight some of the positives and negatives of this trip.

My first issue was instead of charging me $63.50 for a deposit, they charged me $6350! I caught this on the confirmation email but since it was late in the day and a Friday, they couldn’t transfer me to accounting because no one was answering the phones. A manager told me that they would correct it first thing on Monday. At about 5pm on the same day, the manager called me back and told me that it had been fixed but that I could confirm it when I checked in on Sunday evening.

We drove over from Tampa and arrived before my son's nap. My first impression upon driving up to the resort was that it was huge...and a bit bland and dated looking. There was also a pretty large crowd gathered at the bus stops...larger than I had ever seen over at AKL. We parked and I went inside to check in and the line to check in was not much shorter than the bus stop. It moved relatively quickly though and the CMs were very efficient with getting people checked in. The interior reminded me of a bus terminal for some reason!

I asked for a lake view room, because I did not want to deal with the pool noise. Our reservations were for 2 beds and a refrigerator. I know I should have confirmed those at the front desk, but I forgot. When I got to the room...1 king size bed and a fridge. It also wasn't lakeside either, but it was a preferred room. Well, I went back down to see the CM about getting a different room...one with 2 beds. She told me the new one was a lakeside room (after consulting her chart) but when we got there, it was a poolside room! Too tired to do another room change all over again, we called guest services to get the fridge moved over. They did a good job with that request but it came back to haunt us as you shall see! Housekeeping is on top of things at POP. When I was down changing our rooms over, my wife and son are sitting in the old one. Housekeeping arrived to clean the old room even before I got back up there to move our stuff over to the new room. Was probably the easiest turnaround she had ever had to do.

Impressions...we were in the 60s wing, by the big Mowgli and Baloo. The stairways and exterior corridors were wet and a bit moldy in places. I didn't really like the exterior access to the rooms and the whole place just felt damp. My son wanted to take the stairs at the end of the wing that were encased by a big yo-yo. We did it, but it smelled like vomit inside of them so we did not do it again.

The room: 2 full size beds...if you are not used to sleeping with someone in a full sized bed, you may be in for a surprise. Bryan got a lot of sleep that night...mom and dad much less. The fridge in the room would make a VERY loud clunk every time the compressor kicked on, which was quite often. The pool quiet hours - weren't...and it sounded as if the AK safari was down there until about 2AM. It wasn't that people were purposely being loud...it is just that the resort walls and doors can't handle even the normal noise load. We were able to hear people in the rooms next to us, and that was a problem starting at about 6AM when the girls next door to us got up...so did we. Again, it was not because they were being overly loud...the excitement of Disney combined with thin walls made it that way.

The room was clean, with plenty of towels to go around. When we went down to the pool, we asked room service for extras and they were delivered before we got back from the pool. This differs from AKL since they have towels at the pool, but it worked out fine.

The pool: We only did the main pool in the middle by our room. A very large heated pool (it was 50ish outside but our son wanted to go) and VERY attentive life guards...about 6 of them. I was impressed with how closely they watched the pool. They have little water jets at the bottom of the pool that create warm spots and once you find one of them, you tend to park when it is that cold outside (Hey, I am from Florida). They had balls to throw around and some water showers around the edges of the pool for the kids to splash in. It seemed to be a uniform depth throughout the pool, but I am not sure of that.

The dining: We ate at the walk in restaurant at POP (I cannot think of its name) and the food was good. Plenty of room, condiments were everywhere, and it was not crowded. I bought one of the refill mugs - they are worth it if you DONT LOSE IT! I lost it, if you haven’t guessed.

The grounds: I was impressed with the décor once we got past the main entrance. Bryan loved walking around looking at the large Play-doh container and the statues were very impressive. The pool was kept very clean (I saw them pressure washing it in the morning) and the staff was very attentive to the grounds.

In summary: Well, 4 hours of sleep, coupled with a bed that was smaller than what we were used to and a failing fridge, I went down to the lobby in the AM and requested to move to AKL for the remainder of the trip. I suppose I have been spoiled by AKL but I just wasn’t going to be happy at POP for 3 more nights…no way, no how. Overall it just struck me as more of a budget hotel than a Disney resort for the price that we were paying – even with the FL resident discount. I know some people will say you just sleep there, but that is just not true for us. When we stay for 4 nights, you tend to “move in” and want to come back to someplace that you can relax. I am afraid that I was just not going to be able to do that at POP Century because I was dreading the late nights with little sleep and I saw no resolution to that situation.

Sorry about being so negative but I wanted to give my true impressions instead of a pass review that might be misleading.

Sorry you had a bad experience! My DH and I love POP.

That sounds horrible!

I assume you went to the parks and had fun, at least?

I've been there twice, and luckily I never had the bad experience as you had. The worst thing that happened was my bed sheets were dirty.. which isn't a big deal.

Maybe next time :earboy2:

Was it your dirty bed sheets or someone elses (EWWW).
I have stayed there before and am going back in 3 week. I had no problems.
For the price and convenience, I was extremely happy!

Wow. :( What a shame you didn't enjoy POP. We had a great stay at POP. I am glad it seems you enjoyed the rest of your stay though.

I thoroughly enjoyed the parks...we try to go during slow times and so there are very light crowds.

Also, everything is new to my son, so I get to see it all through the eyes of a child which makes it even better.

I have seen a few other posts discussing if you can "move down" from deluxes or mods to a value. Personally, I found it hard to do. $$$ was not really an issue (which is why I upgraded) so to me the answer is that it is difficult to do without adjustments.

Disney is a great place, and I am sorry that I was more negative than positive in the POP review...I just wanted to be honest about my feelings during the stay.

Maybe I just got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning!

I can understand your feelings and request for a resort change. Ambiance means alot to us too and we like to settle in and feel at home even for 4 ngts.

We have stayed at POP a few times, but will probably not do so again. We first stayed 3 mos after it opened. When we drove up to the entrance I wanted to leave immediately - at check-in I asked to change resorts, but the CM convinced us to stay and give it a try, so we did. We were not sorry. :)

Our room had a lake view and view of EPCOT fireworks - which was fun. The room was brand new and better than we expected.

Unfortunately, our last 3 stays had major issues with the cleanliness of the room. It was disgusting - so much so that I'll not share what was so disgusting, but your imagination will do fine.

Maybe it's just always full now and needs some refurb, but over the years guests seemed to get louder and rather obnoxious (no one from the DIS, of course! :) ).

Our room locations have always been perfect lake views - very relaxing and we have always been able to see the fireworks.

Until POP is refurbished or the Legendary Years open, we'll probably not stay again. Nevertheless, we enjoyed POP and miss being able to stay there for a quick trip.

Glad you were able to switch resorts and enjoy your trip!

I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay at POP.

We also stayed at POP - behind the giant Mowgli! We thought the place was fine. I'm sure if I had previously stayed in one of the higher priced resorts, that I would think this one came up short - but all we wanted was a nice place to stay onsite. We didn't go for the hotel, we went for the parks.

Our room was clean, not huge, but just what we needed. The restaurant and main lobby area were very nice - we loved the pool! The hotel was wonderful for the price - nothing to complain about for us. It was not like being at a Hilton, but I wasn't paying Hilton prices.

We were quite happy with POP and will be returning in December.

I am not sure they are going to finish Legendary years. It looked pretty abandoned from some of the pictures I have seen with no progress being made on it for some time.

We were considering pop but now I am not so sure. Thinking more about moderate now. Anyone else see mold and have problems w/ noise? If we can not sleep then that would lower spirits for sure.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Pop. We LOVE Pop and are finally getting to stay there again in June. We have stayed at Value, Deluxe, and FW cabins. I haven't had a problem with supposedly "downgrading". To me as long as I am at WDW, I could sleep in my car.

Now, we stayed at AKL in December and I was NOT impressed at all.

We never had a problem with noise from the next room, We never heard anybody passing outside our door. Housekeeping came early as we requested and always left towel animals.

Suzanne princess:

We are staying there 4/10-4/20. Dh, me and our 11 yo DD's. I know that it will most likely be crammed, but we have camped in the rain when there are 4 of us in a 6 man tent. As long as it's clean I'll be fine. We just need a place to rest our heads and recoop for the next day. I have heard so much negative about POP, but I am waiting to stay there to form my own opinion.

Oh no! We stayed at AKL last February and LOVED it. I'm traveling with just my sister in August and we're staying at POP. Doh! I really hope we have a better experience than you did. I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties. I really, really, really hope that I am not too spoiled by AKL to enjoy POP.

Thanks for sharing!

Sorry you had a lousy experience...glad the rest of the trip was great.

We were in 50's facing the pool first floor...3 rooms in a row; us connected to kids and grandparents on other side....it was great! We didn't have a fridge so didn't have annoying noise...

dirty sheets would not fly...that's gross.

We stayed at Poly recently and loved it as well. Just two rooms this time.

I'd go back to both but hope to try another....want to see them all. LOL.

Trish

You shouldn't change your plans based on a couple of negative reviews. You can find good reviews of Pop on this forum, as well.

Personally, I really enjoy Pop. We've stayed there five times (several trips were 10 nights or more) and never had any problems.

We, too, hated POP. But we figured we were spoiled too by BWV, SSR and even POR. We switched after 2 nights to BWV. It was worth every extra penny. When I go to WDW, I want to feel like I'm on a luxury vacation. I understand why they have POP and think it's great so that EVERYONE can afford to go to WDW. But it ain't me.

I just stayed at POP in January, and I thought it was so-so. I just sort of felt disconnected from Disney there for some reason. The theming was cool, but I didn't get the same magical feel I did at the All Stars.

The purple buildings were not my thing - reminded me a bit of old tenement buildings from the 70's - but not as ugly of course.;)

And seeing the Legendary Years in their deplorable state wasn't fun either - I couldn't help it from the 50's building we stayed in - everytime we went out to the parking lot, there it was. I wish they would build a huge wall so it wasn't visible.

Other than that, the rooms were clean, service was great, food court was pretty good, gift shop was nice - better than offsite, but I'd choose the All Stars if going value again.

We stayed in the same building on the 2nd floor next to the pool and we heard no noise whatsoever. Maybe there was a party going on down there that night. I do remember the vomit smell in that stairwell -- I'm sure if it were vomit it wouldn't still be there more than a year later so it must be something else causing that smell.

My kids loved POP. We were planning on staying at POR or CBR our next trip but my ds6 and dd4 want to go back to POP. I will definitely consider going back. We thought the food court and gift shop were wonderful, we never had a wait for a bus (lucked out there), our room was always clean and we always had extra towels - now I did find the beds a bit uncomfortable the first night or two but after that we were so tired we didn't even notice.

My DBF and I spent 6 nights at POP early this month and we loved it. We were in the 90's building on the first floor right by the computer pool. We didn't hear much noise from the pool (even on Superbowl Sunday) and our room was kept very clean. I did hear a few toilets flushing and some early AM alarm clocks, but I lived in a dorm a few years ago so I don't mind that stuff. Maybe Mousekeeping was extra good to us because we tipped every day. We even got a little stuffed Goofy at our door with our bill. It had a note on it that said "For You" and a hand drawn Mickey. I don't know if it was from the hotel or Mousekeeping or a DISer who saw my name in our room window or whatever, but it did make the end of our trip a little more magical.

The lines for the buses were long sometimes, but we tried more indirect routes if they were too long for us. We'd just get in the shortest bus line and transfer to where we wanted to go. For two days we took the Epcot bus and transfered to the monorail from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom. I figure it took about as long to do that as it would to stand in line. Also, we took the DHS bus and then took the ferry to Epcot. It was fantastic. We got to see all the Epcot hotels up close. We used that little trip to give us ideas about hotels for the next trip (Boardwalk, perhaps?) I guess it was good for us because we weren't worried about getting to the parks at the crack of dawn.
I used my AAA discount to pay about $64 a night. When confronted with lines or the motel atmosphere of the place we just reminded ourselves how little we were paying for the room and we should just chill out. You get what you pay for, but it is really up to you to make the most out of it.
