POP and MNSSHP Oct 08 + BONUS Weekend at WL in Dec -*2/20 Update - The End!*

We were all ready to leave our room at 4:00. We took a few pictures of us in our MNSSHP costumes (well, costume for Sam and t-shirts for us). Once again I decided to try the buses instead of driving – we’d had good luck so far. We took the bus to Magic Kingdom and then got on the resort monorail to the Polynesian for our dinner reservations at Kona. I love riding the monorail and try to do it at least once each trip. My favorite part is riding through my favorite resort – The Contemporary. One of these days I hope to stay there again.:cloud9:

This is a horrible picture of my mom and I (Sam took it) but it is the only one I have so you'll have to suffer through it:

And here we are on the monorail:
IMG_1046.jpg

We got to the Poly at 4:45 and our ADR’s were for 5:00 so we spent some time exploring the resort. Samantha has always talked about wanting to stay here even though she had never stepped foot on the grounds. I hadn’t been to the Poly since I was a kid. I remember the big fountain in the lobby. When I was about ten years old and we stayed there, I made a wish by throwing a penny into the fountain. I wished for a dog and on my birthday that same year I got one. I know it had nothing to do with my “wish” but I always remembered that. Of course I had to share that story with Sam and she had to make a few wishes of her own.

We walked around the outside of the resort and saw the very cool pool area. It really is beautiful there. What an awesome few of the castle from the pool – that would be the life! Now Sam really wants to stay at the Poly some day. I think the Polynesian is a very well themed resort but it isn’t my first choice of a deluxe. Maybe because I live in Florida the tropical setting doesn’t do it for me? Of course I would jump at the opportunity to stay there if it ever came up but it just wouldn’t be at the top of my “deluxe” list if I was paying.

Sam at the Poly (I took tons of pictures here too :sad2: ) Of course the only one my mom had didn't turn out that great:
IMG_1047.jpg

Anyway, we were all excited to try a new restaurant for us – Kona! I’d been reading quite a few reviews on the DIS before we went and thought I knew what I wanted to order. We were seated pretty much right away at 5:00 which was nice – I wanted to eat and get to the party as soon as possible. We passed a very cool display of desserts and Halloween decorations on the way to our table. I even took a picture for you all.

We started out with delicious bread with even more delicious macadamia nut butter. That butter was the best I’d ever tasted. I almost could have eaten that by the spoonful (I didn’t).

I was trying to decide between the Macadamia Nut and Chive crusted Mahi-Mahi and the Coconut Almond Chicken. My mom suggested we each order one and then share - that way we could try both. Great idea! Sam ordered a hot dog and fries.:confused3

Both of our meals were good but we both thought the chicken was the best. It was really good – I could go for some right now. I liked the rice that came with the fish and my mom loved the salad that came with the chicken. The salad had pineapple, strawberries and almonds in it.

For dessert Sam had the kid’s sundae. My mom had the coconut cream kiki tart which she thought was way too sweet. I had the banana-chocolate crème brulee. I am not really a crème brulee fan but the pictures I had seen on the DIS of this dessert looked awesome so I thought I’d try it. I thought it was just ok – but I’m glad I tried it!

After we were stuffed from our great dinner and dessert, it was par-tay time!:woohoo: We went out to catch the next monorail when all of a sudden I heard “Samantha!” Coming off the monorail was a boy from Samantha’s class! She knew he was going to be there the same time as us but who would have thought we’d actually run in to him! It really is a small world after all! The boy and his dad were headed to the party as well but had to get his costume which was in their car parked at the Poly. We hopped on the monorail in the same car as the boy’s mom and other siblings so we got to chat for a while. The mom and sisters were going to 1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian for dinner with Cinderella and the step-sisters.

Now it is time for our favorite party – MNSSHP!!

(I will update on MNSSHP later in the week. I should also have my photopass pictures soon so I will add those also!)

Great update Michelle!

Glad you liked Kona. You really must try it at Breakfast!!! However, be prepared once you do to *never* eat breakfast in your room again - LOL!

It is my absolute favourite breakfast spot in all of WDW!

Can't wait to hear all about the Party!:goodvibes

Love it- thanks! Just what I needed after a long Monday! I love that you ran into someone from Sam's class. "It's a small world after all...."

An update just for me?!?! Sweet! :cool1:

I agree with Sam, I want to stay at the Poly too! :cloud9: But I also agree with you... I loved the Contemporary and since it was where we stayed on our first trip it will always be special to me. :lovestruc

Can't wait to hear about the partay!!!

Well I just found your report and haven't read anything yet but your intro but I already like you and your family alot! Your animal people and in my book that makes you an above average person to start with. I battle that worry every time we head off to WDW, leaving my 10 dogs behind!! I finally just gave up and I broad them all at the vet, that way I don't have to worry about them. However the downside to that is that there "VACATION" as I call it usually cost more than mine does!! LOL Eager to finish reading! Off to do so.

Yes - I've heard great things about Kona breakfast! In fact, my parents ate there on our last day in WDW and thought it was fantastic! Now I'm hungry!

I guess I'll have to do a week at the Poly and then a week at the Contemporary - that's the only way I can make a decision on my favorite. Wanna join me?  Seriously, something about the Contemporary just screams "Disney" to me - love it!

Hi and Welcome! :hippie: Thank you so much for the kind words - our animals certainly find their way in to our hearts and become so much a part of the family don't they? We had one bad experience when we boarded at the vet so we vowed not to do it again - especially now that they are old. The less trauma the better I guess. But you are right, the pet sitter/boarding bill is often as much as our vacation bill! I think I'm in the wrong line of work! :)

Michelle, I had no idea you did an update! Ugh...:headache:

We ate at Kona before the party as well (lunch menu) and absolutely loved it! I have always wanted to stay at the Contemporary, but after going over to the Poly two times this last trip the Poly has my heart! (I still want to stay at the Contemporary too, but after seeing the beauty of the Poly, the CR looked more "cold" to me :confused3 )

I think Shawn had the creme brulee you had and he loved it!

Sam looks so cute in her costume and I love your mom and you in your little headbands! You're so festive! :goodvibes

Hmmm....who could you be waiting on for your photopass? :rolleyes1
(Wanted to mail to you today, but dang it if it's not a holiday! :sad2: Going out tomorrow!)

Thanks for the comments on Sam and her costume - she liked it alot. My mom and I wore the headbands all night but the masks came off quickly - way too sweaty!
Can't wait to get that photopass CD - thanks again for handling that for us!:goodvibes

Thanks Scott! I knew you were at POP around the same time and I kept a lookout for you. I would have loved to meet you! :goodvibes
I still need to go and read your report - I'm sure it is awesome!

report is not here. it is on Enchanted.

I have to start by saying that I just love this party! If you haven’t been – you should really try to go sometime. I am not usually a Halloween type of person – we go trick or treating every year but I don’t go crazy decorating or anything like I do at Christmas. But Disney does this party right – it is definitely a favorite of mine!

Sam and I went to our first MNSSHP in 2005 and have gone every year since. The first year we went kind of on a whim – I hadn’t heard much about it but when we were in WDW and saw people getting dressed up and heading out to the party we thought it would be a fun thing to try. We had an awesome time but didn’t realize the scope of what was offered there. In 2006 we went again but it rained a lot of the time and we were really tired that night for some reason - we caught part of the parade and did trick or treating but that was about it. In 2007 we took my mom and didn’t make it past 9:30 on party night. :sad2: We had a full day before the party and were just beat. So, this year I vowed to make it through the entire party (or close to it) and I was determined to see the entire Hallowishes fireworks show and the Boo to You parade. Let’s see if we really do…….

We got off the monorail and were so excited to be entering the party – it was right around 6:00 if I remember right. The costumes were great as always! We saw a couple dressed as Queen of Hearts and Mad Hatter – they looked great! Some lady dressed as something that I couldn’t quite make out – like an old fashioned lady – came up to my mom and I and said “Oh my! You have pumpkins growing out of your heads!” And she was totally in character.:lmao: It was really funny. (We had headbands with pumpkins bobbleheads on top for anyone who didn’t see the picture).

First stop was Haunted Mansion – always a must do at MNSSHP. The posted wait time was only 10 minutes but we noticed the photopass guys out front so we decided to do that first. This is the one where they take your picture in front of the horse and carriage and then a ghost magically appears in the driver’s seat. That was fun! Right after our pictures we rode Haunted Mansion which was a walk on – great ride as always.

We stopped at some of the trick or treat stops on the way over to Thunder Mountain. My mom is not a thrill ride person and had been saying all along that she would NOT ride Thunder Mountain. But, somehow Sam talked her in to it. The wait time said 20 minutes when we got there but it was a walk-on also. I got the front row and my mom and Sam were behind me. I got a great picture of my mom and Sam – my mom had the most frightened look on her face! I sure wish I had that picture. It was a fun ride and my mom screamed the whole time. I think I laughed the whole time. Sam said that grandma hung on to her the entire time. Sam thought it was pretty cool that she was so brave and grandma wasn’t! After Thunder Mountain we walked by Splash Mountain but decided not to ride since Sam had her costume on. We usually end up soaked on that ride and didn’t think she’d be to comfortable walking around in a wet costume all night. We were a little sad about skipping it as it is one of me and Sam’s favorites!

We did some more trick or treating and then walked on to Pirates of the Caribbean – no wait again – woo hoo! Another classic fun ride – even more so during the Halloween party.

Next up was a magic carpet ride! We had to ride this as we had Jasmine with us! Once again – no wait! While we were up and flying around on our carpets, I spotted the real Jasmine and Aladdin down below. I knew we’d have to go and see them next.

Sam and I on our magic carpet - see my camera? I miss you!
IMG_1049.jpg

The line to see Jasmine and Aladdin was quite long but we decided to wait. A few minutes after we got in the line the CM started telling people getting in line that Jasmine and Aladdin would be leaving soon and Genie would be coming out. I was hoping we’d make it to the front of the line in time. And we did – phew! This Jasmine and Aladdin were great – they spent time talking to each kid and really interacted with each other well. I’m glad we waited.

Jasmine was telling Sam that she loved her purple outfit and wished she had worn hers that night:
IMG_1050.jpg

Too bad Sam's eyes are closed (but we got a good one with photopass I think:
IMG_1051.jpg

Next up was Tomorrowland. We went on Astro Orbiter first – not much of a wait – I think there were two groups before us. I just love the view from up there, especially at night. My mom doesn’t take the spinning rides very well but went on it anyway. She and Sam rode together and I rode alone. I wish the ride was longer! I could fly around there all night taking in the sights!

One ride Sam had not yet tried was Space Mountain. She was a little concerned about not sitting together but I finally convinced her that if she could handle Rock n Rollercoaster and Expedition Everest then Space Mountain was nothing. I knew she would like it once she tried it (or I hoped!) The stand by line was 20 minutes and Sam said she was ready to try it. I was excited – Space Mountain is one of my favorites, such a fun ride! About half way through the line we hear an announcement that there is a problem and the ride should restart soon. After a few more minutes the lights came on (we weren’t close enough to see anything) and they said the ride would restart when able. Ugh! We decided to leave as we wanted to be sure not to miss the fireworks. I knew we’d be back to MK on Sunday so I figured we would get to ride then. I wish we would have jumped on the TTA to see SM with the lights on though! I knew we’d be back to MK on Sunday so I figured we would get to ride then.

We decided it was time to find a spot to watch Hallowishes. We walked through the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station and decided to sit at one of the tables there. It looked like it would be a great view (sorta from the side but still good) and we’d get to sit! There was only one other table being used at the time but as the time for fireworks got closer the area filled up a bit more. While we were waiting we dug in to our candy bags and started sampling the goods. :thumbsup2

Here is Sam and our view of the castle:
IMG_1053.jpg

Hallowishes finally started and was FANTASTIC! Sam and I had been listening to the music for the past month or so which made it even more fun. My mom really enjoyed it too. I love the location we watched from and would do that again next year. It was nice to actually be at a table and the people around us were all so nice.

Next up was the Boo to You parade! I wasn’t planning to sit on Main Street for this but as we were leaving the Noodle Station we noticed how empty Main Street looked and decided to grab a spot there. I’m glad we did – there is just something about watching a parade from Main Street. We got our spots and then I went to one of the stores to get my party pins. When I got back I could tell Sam was really tired, she ended up lying down across my mom and I to rest for a bit. There was so much to keep us entertained while we waited for the parade! There was a balloon artist guy making hats for the kids – he was fantastic! I saw him make a horse, hats with hair and even a sorcerer Mickey hat that was awesome. He was a lot of fun to watch. I wish Sam would have been more awake to get a balloon from him! They also have music playing and shadows of ghosts and witches displayed on the stores. There was also a three piece band playing and they had their instruments all lit up – really cool! The lights on the buildings and Main Street were just right too – very enjoyable time waiting for the parade to start.

Here are the ghosts on the store:
IMG_1055.jpg

Now for what ended up being my favorite part of the night – the Headless Horseman!:yay: Oh my goodness! I had never seen him before but had heard about him and didn’t really know what to expect. A CM came down the street telling us that when they made the announcement about the Headless Horseman we all had to get our feet up off the street. I had no idea that the horseman really couldn’t see anything and had no control. She told us that the horse is very well trained but is pretty much on its own and has been known to come close to the sidewalk. They made the announcement and before we knew it the Headless Horseman was flying down Main Street. That was the coolest thing ever! I couldn’t believe how big the horse was and how fast it was going. I can’t believe we had never seen him before – now a definite not miss for us! I told my mom that I wanted that job – of the Headless Horseman. That became a running joke during our trip – I would constantly be telling her that I wanted someone’s job at Disney!

The Boo to You parade was awesome too! Loved everything about it – so well done! It’s hard to pick a favorite part but I loved the grave diggers and also Goofy on the candy machine at the end. There was so much interaction between the guests and the people in the parade. Sam was wide awake by this point and enjoying every minute. I would love to be in the parade in some capacity too!

Our only parade pictures:

IMG_1057.jpg

After the wonderful parade we decided to head back to the resort. I was thrilled we actually got to see both the parade and fireworks this time. We didn’t get as much trick or treating done as in years past which was fine – we can get candy anywhere. There was hardly anyone in line for the bus which was a welcome surprise! Sam fell asleep on the bus ride back to Pop. My mom and Sam were asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow back in the room. I had a hard time falling asleep – I think my adrenaline was still going from the awesome party!

Here is Sam pretending to sleep before she actually fell asleep!

Next up – Epcot!

YAY! I loved this update Michelle! Sam looks so cute! That's great that your Mom went on Thunder Mountain and that Sam got to feel all grown up being the brave one! So sweet!

I don't think I could ride Astro Orbiter. The spinning of rides like the Teacups I can do, but that gliding/spinning like from the swings (at other parks like Kings Dominion) and Astro Orbiter (I'm speculating here as I've never actually been on it) just don't do well with my stomach. The views I would love though! :sad1:

Too bad Space broke down. Never fails - they finally get the nerve to do something and something else gets in the way.

Your spot for Hallowishes sounds great - what is that in front of Sam in the picture? :confused3

Sounds like a great parade spot and a good view of the headless horseman! You would WANT that job? Scary! That horse was huge!

Great update as usual my friend! :goodvibes

Sara

What a wonderful MNSSHP!!

I am jealous that you saw the headless horseman. It was POURING when I saw the Boo to You Parade, so the headless horseman did not ride.

It's great that the lines were so short for the rides! Bummer about space mountain. I hope you got back there later in the weekend!

Love the MNSSHP pics!! We have never been..hope to in 2010. Can't wait to see your Photopass pics :goodvibes
