We'll be staying at AKL while I'm at a three day seminar. Will the rest of my family be able to use the pool and other amenities at other Disney resorts for a change of scenery? Or do you only get to use them at your own resort?

Welcome to the DIS boards. No, you are not allowed to use other resort pools. Each pool is designated for use by it's registered guests only. The only exceptions are if you are staying at an All Star resort...then you can swim in any of the three pools. Or, if you are at POR/POFQ..then you can switch pools. But, that's it. DVC members, staying on their DVC points are allowed to pool-hop (use other resort pools) but even they are not allowed to use the pools at YC/BC or AKL. And, they can be asked to leave the pool area if the pool gets too crowded with regular guests.
Hope this helps a bit.

It is not really allowed, but here is a story for what happened to us...
We were visiting the GF after breakfast and wandering around. Meg had on her swimsuit under her clothes and it ties up around the neck (we were thinking of going to TL after breakfast, but it was too chilly).

We were over admiring the pool with the slide and the lifeguard asked my daughter if she wanted to try it out. You have never seen an 11 yr old run zip out of her clothes so fast! She was the only one in the pool and had the whole thing to herself. I talked to the lifeguard for a min and thanked him. Told him we were staying at Pop and this was a lot of fun for her. He said he saw her swimsuit tie and thought maybe we were staying there, then saw us go to walk away and figured we weren't and would offer.

So it 'could' happen that you get invited! lol.

Although you aren't supposed to swim at other pools, for a change of scenery, we love to visit other resorts for a snack or drink. That is fun, and sometimes you can sit outside sort of near the pool. It's a really fun way to plan where you may want to stay on future trips!

One year, while I was pregnant (and it was HOT out so I stayed indoors most of the trip and didn't visit the parks) my DH had a conference. We were staying at the SOG, and I walked over to the GF and ate at their counter service place for lunch, then I'd get a soda and relax with a book in the lobby. It was so nice to enjoy the ambiance there, as it wasn't crowded. There were lots of comfy sofas to sit at and relax, enjoying the music and all. You could even do high tea there if you like! Just a thought - also once we got drinks by the Poly's pool, just not in the way of guests there.

Your family is welcome to use all the amenities of the other resorts, except the pools. They can shop, dine, rent boats, bicycles, etc at any WDW resort. There's horseback riding and a petting zoo at FW, too. The WDW resorts are all unique and fun to explore; it's a great way to spend a non-park day.
