I agree....although I'm trying US/IOA for the first time and, evidently, they encourage pool hopping. Being that it'll be August and the parks aren't as big as WDW, I'm looking forward to checking out all the pools!
For the future, have her try the slide at HRH. My son liked the Portofino slide, but the HRH slide is my absolute fave. Alas I disliked being at the oh-so-cool HRH pool, and the proper part of the pool (vs the plunging off the slide part) is so shallow you can't truly swim, but I dealt with it for his fun.
I went to the Art of Animation hotel during the 1st week that it opened just to check out the decor and I spoke to a front desk CM. When I mentioned that I was a local, he actually told me that I could spend a day at any of the pools except Y&B and AoA -- I was very surprised that he actually said that when there are signs up at every pool that say that the pools are for registered guests only. I'm not sure if Disney is trying to get extra revenue from the locals dining at the resorts? Like the other poster said, AoA is gated and Y&B requires a wrist band.
If we are going with another family who is staying on-site can we join them for a swim at THEIR resort pool even though we aren't on-site guests? Obviously we'll be swimming, WITH them, though...

The rule as written is no. However, you can ask, and you may be allowed to do so. But you have to ask a lifeguard right when you want to swim. They are in charge of the pool area, and it is totally up to them on if they want to watch "extra" guests or not.
There is no way of knowing ahead of time, so it may be more trouble that it is worth.
We (DH & I) and my daughter and family were both staying at Yacht Club. My son and family were at POP. They (son & family) were not allowed to use the pool at Yacht Club.
The answers to these and many other questions about pool hopping can be found in our Pool Hopping FAQ at the top of this board. I'm going to close this thread, any further discussion can take place on the FAQ thread.
