It can be nerve wracking sending money to complete strangers. If you want to verify ownership of rental home, you can do so by checking the tax records at these sites:

In most cases, you will not be refunded if you need to cancel you trip for any reason, so it is a good idea to get trip insurance. We found very good, yet inexpensive, coverage through:

If you are planning to use the community pool and clubhouse often, you might want to ask the owner how close their homes are to that area. These communities are fairly large and it may be quite a hike to the community areas.

If you are traveling with children, it is nice to find a home that provides cribs, high chairs, strollers... for free, so this may be something to look for. You may also want to inquire about the layout of the home. A few homes we looked at had the master suite on a different floor, away from the other bedrooms that the children would be staying in. We personally didn't want to be that far away from the children so now we know to always ask.
