I was scheduled to have the pool (gunite, white plaster) closed last week but I cancelled it because I have a problem with the back wash valve. The person who closed it last year left it opened, the valve (froze)broke and despite reassurances that he would replace it, (I even gave him cash to get the part) he is a no show. I am having my old pool company close it but because I can't use the pool pump to lower the level at the last couple of hours, I have to lower the level ahead of time. I siphoned off 4 inches in 2 hours today without my submersible pump but I don't want to lower it until I vaccuum it for the last time. Tomorrow it is going to be outrageously windy until tomorrow night. I am sure that more leaves will fall in the pool. Has anyone had any problems with a few leaves in the pool over the winter. I am worried about stains settling on the bottom. Suggestions. Its supposed to stop raining any minute!! They are coming Monday after noon.

If you have a white concrete bottom to your pool (like my parents) the leaves will stain. If you have a liner, then they'll be barely visible. I would get the leaves out as soon as they fall in though, just as a precautionary measure.

We put a leaf net over our pool this fall. It is wonderful and very inexpensive. It would solve your leaf problem and extend your closing time.

I have my auto-vac on right up until the pool company comes to close our pool. They bring a "water extractor" with them and drain the water to the level they want. It doesn't take them long to close. You could call your company and ask them if that's a part of the closing...it should be. I like mine spotless before it's closed as well.
We put a solid cover underneath the loop-loc cover that keeps out any rain, leaves etc.

I've never heard of draining your own pool, everyone likes to vac. just before they come to close. How much does yours cost to close, ours was $302 this year, up $52

I like the idea of a leaf net but its a little late now. I just vacuumed and it didn't take me more than 30 minutes. I don't have a loop loc, just a solid cover. In our area, they expect the water level to be lowered prior to their arrival or its an extra charge per 15 minutes. The current cost is $339 plus tax providing they don't have to replace any water bags or incurr any extra time. Its going to be real windy tomorrow; 40 to 50 mph gusts. Fortunately most of the leaves are still greenish. I am going to get up Monday and get out there at sun rise. I will vacuum, get the siphon going, hook up my submersable pump and borrow my neighbor's pump. I just called. I should be able to lower the level in the time I need. My pool is a free form pool so I haven't bought a custom fit 'anything'. I have a solar cover than I cut to the right shape myself. ;)

Okay here's something to think about

We NEVER cover our gunite pool in Town- 500,000 gallons...its the nastiest thing you ever see in the spring. We drain it, but have a hydrostatic release valve, so ground water gets in and fills up the 10 foot section..

That said- you can get any stain out of gunite, except rust...just use TLC or straight liquid chlorine- or clorox, whateva, it'll come clean.

Our pool was completed early fall this year, so we didn't get to use it yet....it is getting closed this week. Our heater isn't hooked up yet. Anyway, we have TONS of leaves - next year we will close our pool by Oct 1 because of the leaves, but this year it wasn't possible. (or cover it with a solar cover which we don't have yet). Leaves are so dirty & now we have tons of floating debri in our pool - our auto vac is running all the time. My question is - will we have lots of dirt & debri in the spring & summer from the trees......or is it simply because of falling leaves & the dirt that the leaves bring with them? I hope the trees are only a nuissance in the fall......what have other experienced?
