Winnie the Pooh case returns to Calif. court
Reuters, 05.20.03, 9:10 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal judge Tuesday sent a suit over Winnie the Pooh royalties against Walt Disney Co. back to the California state court that has been hearing it for more than a decade.

The decision was the second against Disney in as many weeks by U.S. District Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper.

In a related copyright case, Cooper on May 9 rebuffed a Disney-backed attempt by the granddaughter of author A.A. Milne to reclaim U.S. marketing rights to the honey-loving bear from Stephen Slesinger Inc.

Cooper ruled that in light of the copyright ruling the motion to move the royalties case to federal court was moot.

Slesinger is owned by the family that acquired the merchandising rights from Milne in 1930 and which claims in the suit returning to California Superior Court that Disney has shortchanged it over Pooh royalties.

Disney denies those charges but has said losing the suit could cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.
