I was shopping today and noticed some nice ponchos (if you can use the word 'nice' to describe a poncho!) in outdoor type shops. They were outlet ones so weren't really expensive - about £4.99 for adult ones.

We haven't really had to use ponchos much before but when we have we've used really thin, 99p type but I find they literally are a one shot and then often tear etc as so flimsy.

So, would I be better to pay a little more and buy a better quality one? I think they are more useful in that you can re-use them, but they are heavier (not much tbh) and take up more room in bag etc.

In addition, part of me thinks the 99p ones are a one shot then you can throw away and not worry about storing wet ponchos in your bag!

What do others use? I don't fancy paying for a Disney one :rolleyes1.

We paid for Disney ones & mine broke first day :) OH swapped mine for his though being all gentlemanly :D

I have no idea how much I paid though, would definitely take cheaper ponchos doesn't matter what they cost they still could rip! I remember the Disney ones not being cheap for sure.

River Island have some 'nice' festival ones!

I'm thinking of getting this one for £5! Plus it has a unicorn on!

But I've also found this one on ASOS;

Think that one might hold out longer as seems made out of material more then plastic :) I'm going to hang on though and see if any go in the sale after festival season!

We would rather get wet. Only bought ponchos once, sweat so much in the heat we were just as wet as not wearing them, they were a complete waste of time. We just dodge in & out of the rain.

I saw a fab one today Azza - it had pink 'love hearts' all over it - the sweetie types with messages all over them. They also had one with little strawberries all over for the DDs :lovestruc. They are more plasticky if you see what I mean, so I think are stronger.

In August if it's raining I don't fancy walking around in just my clothes, and would much rather keep walking around if possible. But I take the point about getting sweaty in them - they probably won't be much use in a downpour anyway. They are not the nicest looking things, but I still think I'd rather have them just in case! :thumbsup2

I don't wear them on water rides (no point really) but don't want to walk around in wet clothes in a downpour.

DLP, after buying cheap ones, I bought the proper Disney ones eventually. They cost about the equivalent of £4.99 when you convert (about $8.99) and are strong and durable. Also, if you tear it or it gets damaged and you take it to a store or cart that sells it, they will change it for you.

Never knew you could change them! Damn wish I'd knew that last year!

We have been for years in the summer and we vary rarely use a poncho. The showers of a summer are always of an afternoon and if its anything else then you will need more than a poncho :rotfl:

Seriously, you can see the storms coming and by watching the weather of the morning you will have a good idea of timing so we usually plan it so we are back at the resort and inside. Its not the rain but the fact these are very violent thunderstorms - you do not want to be outside.

We also experienced a tropical storm that stalled a couple of years ago and it just rained for days - ponchos didn't work and we ended up buying waterproof jackets.

We still have ponchos but we vary rarely use them now so much so that I would just say buy Disney ones if you need to - they sell them everywhere when it rains!!

Mostly I agree with Wayne that in August you'll get very hot and sweaty in them but once in a while the rain is prolonged enough to need them.

Take a few 99p ones and take one out with you each day. (The ones we had were 99p for 2 and not any thicker than a bin bag.) They take up very little space in your day bag and you can throw them away once wet.

Where do i find these 99p ponchos?

Doesn't matter if it rains 3 hours, I am never wearing a poncho again, 100+ outside, 110+ inside the poncho with sweat running down the inside. Not for me:rotfl:

2 years ago I was absolutely drenched, not a dry spot on my body, just like getting off Kali river rapids:goodvibes, doesn't take long to dry out in summer. If its going to be prolonged then we leave.

Same in UK though, walked to a restaurant on Sunday night in torrential rain, got drenched, I dried eventually.

we always buy the disney ponchos and do ok with them.

i have a special plastic bag that i use to store them (and then keep them in the plastic bag inside the backpack i carry into the parks..

only DH's poncho ever tears, but he keeps using it anyway....

at the end of the trip, i throw them out in the hotel room. No need to carry them home. :)

of course, i only buy them with the first rain.
One trip we actually never bought any - it never rained!!! (hard to believe)

Tesco sell them - 2 for £1. They are very bin-bag esque but will sort you out in a sudden downpour. They weigh nothing to carry around.

They are hot and uncomfortable, I agree. I don't wear one for myself as much as I do to protect the camera bag. I can throw a poncho over me and it covers the bag too. When I didn't take a big camera I actually didn't bother with a poncho.

The problem with being soaked becomes a bigger issue if you get onto a bus and sit in that freezing A/C though.

i just remembered - i buy one for myself every year, even if it doesn't rain...

why?

for kali river rapids, of course..
i'm one of those wimps who wears a poncho on it (and somehow i still get soaked!!  )

.

Just a normal day for me, got soaked thru this morning loading and unloading then into the shop, I keep the temp at 5c all year round. I was wet & cold but no Florida sunshine to bask in, 3 hours later my fingers are still like blocks of ice.

Omg I love these!!!!!
Thank you so much for posting! Never thought of asos or river island or any high street shop before lol I'm clearly not a festival goer lol

that's DD's approach...she's disappointed if she's the one who comes out dry (there's always one person in the boat who stays perfectly dry!! )

she has to go again, until she's soaked to the bone!!

Wait ..... your daughter has come off KRR without getting wet? How? I firmly believe that you'd be drier if you actually swim through the rapids instead of boarding the raft :rotfl:

I often watch people wearing ponchos on there and then they complain as they lift them up to show us all how the water got in through the neck. I was really wicked on one occasion and noticed someone all poncho'd up, but with the hood down had collected a nice little water supply in their hood. I watched with amusement when they got off, boasting about how they weren't as wet as everyone else and then as they pulled the poncho over their head .... :lmao:

i'm very careful to keep the poncho pulled up over my head (you know me - frizzball hair - if it gets wet, it's NOT a pretty sight)..
and i tuck the poncho in all around my legs..
and i keep my feet up off the floor..

no matter - somehow i STILL get wet!!! but at least a tad drier than otherwise...
