Poncho question

I was looking at the forecast for our upcoming trip. It looks to be humid and wet. We are from the Southeast so humid and wet is normal to us, so we plan to stay in the parks (as we have done in the past). I have a handful of dollar store emergency ponchos, but was thinking of grabbing heavier duty ponchos. Does anyone have recommendations? Or should I just stick to my trusty disposable ones?

On our last holiday we purchased the park ponchos; it only rained once, for about two hours. The ponchos kept us dry...but underneath it was like a sauna!

Up to you.
We have some heavier ones bought at Walmart for about $8. HERE.

We have used them (and re-used them) over many, many trips.

The disney ones are great! I like them much better than our dollar store ones.

They also have a nice selection at the target nearby, lots of disney characters to choose from.

I've done it both ways and I prefer the nicer walmart ones to the dollar store ones if it's gonna rain more than once. My dollar store ponchos were one and done. I have taken my walmart ones on two trips! I don't see the point in paying twice the amount for the WDW ones, but if you want the souvenir, they're good too.

I've taken the "nicer" Walmart ones and had them rip easily.
For me the point of buying Disney ponchos is because they are better quality and have lasted for a number of trips over the last X amount of years and if they rip they are replaced free of charge.

You can get fairly cheap ponchos *with sleeves* on amazon. It's just a matter if you want ponchos to be "disposable" or have to shake them off and put them in your bag and carry them around after the rain.

We don't find it to be a problem to carry them around after the rain.
We pull them off inside out and then put them in a quart size ziplock bag and put them in our park bags.

With the dollar store ponchos, we just bring them back (we take a zipper bag with us for each one) and reuse. No need to "dispose" as plastic doesn't degrade. We do have curbside recycling and other avenues for doing that so if one becomes "enhanced", that's what we do.

Bring your dollar store ponchos. If you find you need something more heavy duty, buy the DW ponchos in the park.

I agree with this, and it always works for us. We always take our dollar store ones and our DW ones. For shorter rain periods, we use the cheap ones and throw away when it clears up. If the rain lasts longer, we'll switch to our DW ones. The cheap ones stick & tend to leak after a bit. While the DW ones are heavier, they don't stick, they don't leak, & we've found since they don't stick-they actually feel cooler allowing a breeze. We'll fold the DW ones back up in a plastic sack and clean/dry them out back in our room.

I have always had a bad experience with dollar store ponchos...when it rains in florida it monsoons and those flimsy little ponchos blow up at the back..the hood wont stay up/..I end up soaked..never again lol

The Disney parks ponchos are nice and heavier duty but I still managed to rip 2 of them soo maybe just stick with the dollar ones unless you run out or get totally soaked

Oh - one more thing. Binder clips. Take them to put at the bottom of the hood of any poncho to close off the neck area so it's more secure around your head. Also, with the lighter ponchos, attach a couple to the bottom hem to hold it down.

I guess we've just been lucky. In 15 trips to WDW (bringing Dollar Store ponchos), we have only had to use them once! It's simpler to just toss the wet ones, IMHO.

Wow. When do you typically go? In two trips we've had 2 all Day rains and several down pours. :umbrella: But that's my family's luck.

I agree with others disposable ponchos for short or light rain and Disney ponchos for all day.

We've always used the cheaper ponchos from the camping section in Target and they work fine for us. We usually use the same ponchos for a few trips, so they last well for what we need them for. Thankfully we haven't had to use them for long periods...just running from rain to cover or from park to transportation. We don't usually stay at the parks if it looks like it is going to rain for hours (exception is EPCOT...that is our go-to rainy day park), we go back to the resort and go to the arcade, shop, play games in our room, explore the resort, etc.

Don't get too concerned about the forecast. We're still in the "dry" season here (very, very close to the parks) and haven't had appreciable rain for a while. Yes, there was a brief (5 minutes) shower a few days ago. But really nothing to speak of. In fact, I had to add water to my pool today because there hasn't been any precipitation recently to keep it to normal levels.

Of course, its always good to be prepared with a poncho just in case.
