Anyone have any recommendations on a tour company we can book a day trip to Pompeii the day before our Viva Italia tour starts? We are also looking to book a tour of the catacombs either the day we arrive or the day our tour starts (we are arriving two full days before our Disney tour starts).

There are so many tour companies online, and I just want to make sure we get a reputable one. :thumbsup2

When we went on the Disney Med cruise, we booked some private tours with other DISers. We used a company for a tour of Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast, which was outstanding. My kids and I rated Pompeii as a definite highlight of the cruise.

My contact was:

You might ask Claudio about only Pompeii. We had a young lady, and she was so interesting. Our tour actually went an extra hour because she enjoyed our interest so much. (We asked a lot of questions) There were 3 families, 11 of us in total, on that tour.

When we went last summer, we dropped our bags at the Bernini Bristol & spent a couple days in Sorrento. Did the Amalfi Coast, & hit Pompeii on our way back to Rome.

For a day trip, we had originally looked at Viator, who does a nice day trip from Rome.

Having been there now, I'd suggest you consider going on your own.
You could check into the Bernini Bristol (several of our ABD group actually got a free night there prior to the ABD tour!)

You can walk 10 steps out the front door & be in the subway. 2 stops to Termini Station. Catch the non-stop bullet train to Naples (a fun, fast experience). Transfer to local train that will drop you off right at the entrance to Pompeii. Hire a guide there, join a group, or explore on your own.

The Fodor forum actually gives you step by step instructions (complete with pictures!) on how to get from Rome to Pompeii by train.
My 2 kids loved the train experience.

Feel free to private message me with any other ???'s

We took 3 tours with Walks of Italy when we were in Rome. Each was outstanding. Their guides were passionate about the sites they were touring and did a great job of keeping the tour interesting. They did this by basically telling stories versus providing a list of historical facts which can get pretty dry. If you are interested in a catacombs tour, look at the crypts & bones & catacombs tour. We took this one and it was fascinating. They go to the catacombs de Priscilla which I believe is the oldest open to the public (also has the oldest image of the Virgin Mary). Anyways, good luck with your search. If you would like any other information, feel free to PM me.

Thank you for all the suggestions! We actually went with Local Rome Tours. Hopefully they are good. They have good reviews, so we shall see. lol We booked all the other tours with Viator.

It was a little hard to coordinate all the side tours we wanted to do because they only run at certain times/days. We were able to book everything though. I'll have to do a trip report when we get back to let everyone know how the tours were.

I'm getting so excited! We leave in less than 4 months now. :cool1:
