Polynesian and Grand Floridian Pools Locked at night?

Just wondering you were always allowed to go into either pools till late in evening I'm talking 2am, in 2011 that is. With every pool getting gates surrounding them can you no longer do this? it was the coolest thing swimming at the polynesian seeing the castle at Late at night.

The main pool at all resorts will now only be available during pool hours shown on the sign and fencing is being installed at all resorts for this reason. There has been several drownings when children snuck into the pool late at night so all main pools are being fenced. Quiet pools might have longer hours, but they are still "closed" after midnight even if there isn't a fence.

We are at the Poly now and no one is allowed to swim past posted hours. Gates are locked, lights are off and lifeguards are gone. With the new fencing, you can't really see the castle from the pool.

The GF has two feature pools nd no quiet pool. The fence doesn't go all the way around the Beach Pool but they do close off the sidewalk with chairs and signs.

There were not several drownings. That is an exaggeration. But even one is tragic

I always get up early in the am and enjoy a nice dip in an empty pool. Years ago it was lovely when we stayed at the GF and I swam in the main pool (it was much bigger and nicer then) a couple of early mornings. Last year I went swimming at the BWI quiet pool one early morning and no one said anything. A couple of cast members said good morning to me but that was all. I was staying CL and went down the back stairs to reach the pool. I will be very sad if this has to end.

Are you talking about somewhere other than Disney? There have been a couple of tragic drownings at Disney but not under the conditions you describe.

Does anyone know the pool schedule at Grand Floridian? We'll be there next year and we are looking forward to swimming after a day in the parks.

I dont know the hours at GF, but recently saw a pic of a sign at the Poly that is closed at 10. During the summer. I would love a quick swim after a day in the parks. Shame they are not open longer. Im going in Sept. I hope they dont cut the hours even shorter.

It is too bad!!!! We enjoyed swimming after spending all day at the parks too. I am sorry that people have had accidents in the pool, but I think that this is an over reaction from the legal department.

It was at Pop Century when a child drowned when no lifeguards were on duty http://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/13/us/florida-disney-death/. But yes I will accept I said several and there was only one.

There was also a death at Art of Animation more recently but that was during normal pool hours.

I think @Allison was speaking to your statement that the kids snuck in the pool. The teen who drown at Pop was swimming with his parents and extended family right there with him.

Yes, I mis-remembered, they were swimming outside of the lifeguarded hours but I thought it was without parents and I was wrong.

But it does seem to be this case of swimming outside of the lifeguard hours that has prompted Disney to add fences to all lifeguarded pools.

It's not a legal decision per se. At least not Disney's legal dept. It's a law in the state of Florida. The law as changed due to drownings in pools that were open after life guards were off duty. So while any pool in existence when the law changed was grandfathered in and allowed to have no fence, if they make any modifications or refurbishments to a pool a fence must be installed. Really though, when it comes to pool safely is there a such a thing as making it too safe? I know night swims are good and if they could be sure that only people who know how to swim and practice water safety would swim without a life guard present then they'd probably leave them open. But really, you can't do that. I'm the last one to think we need more Nanny-type laws but when it comes to pools, I'm ok. They are just too dangerous
