Poly vs. POR -- difference of $2,000+

Stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge or the Boardwalk. Both are 25% off.
Beach Club is only 10%. The Yacht Club and Wilderness Lodge are also 25% but they both are undergoing construction.
You need a bigger room with 3 adults and 2 kids.

They'd need 2 rooms at AKL or WL as they sleep 4 per room, which would likely put them over their price point.

Advice needed! We've never stayed at a moderate resort and with two small kids (4 and 6 and we're traveling with our nanny) we're concerned about the convenience factor and food options by switching from the Poly to POR.

That said, we'd save over $2,000 and that includes staying an extra night at POR. Please share your thoughts and experience. We'd be traveling in January/February so the pools aren't so much of an issue as the bus vs. monorail, travel time, size of resort, QS food options, room size, etc.

We feel like we need to make a decision this weekend before the Disney Visa discounts become public on Monday.

Thanks!

We are in a similar situation. It's a lot if money to save by switching. I'm just not sure we're prepared to give up the convenience of the Poly.

I just returned from a split stay at both these resorts. Loved both. I wanted to do Poly for all of my next trip but the huge price difference is just too much. Hoping to do a split stay again

The rooms at Poly are definitely larger and I loved the size of the bath but not enough to justify a $2K price difference. I wasn't as in love with the Poly as everyone else seems to be.

And so now, I want to know what the final decision was? I am afraid I would cave for the money and POR.

If 2K isn't a huge deal go for the Poly. For me that's a lot of money and we would be doing POR.

A huge thank you to everyone who commented. I was able to find a magical deal from a travel agent and for a difference of $1900 instead of $2800 we decided to go with 8 nights at Poly!

A few thoughts in our decision-making that may help others in a similar situation:
1. The room size. We need a little more elbow room with 3 adults.
2. Monorail. My boys LOVE the monorail and they said they wanted to be close to it so they could just ride it for fun (they did that for hours on a rainy day on our last trip).
3. On-site character dining. We use the dining plan primarily for the character dining experiences. Having one on-site is a huge bonus for us.
4. The cost difference is about one day of work for me. I figured one day in the office is worth the extra comfort and convenience for my family (a thank you to the fellow consultant who helped break it down in billable hour terms) ;)
5. Babsy's comment: "Comfortable accommodations and good sleep are essential to a good trip for us." That sealed the deal. SO TRUE!

Again, thank you all for the great advice and opinions. It was great appreciated!

The 2 kids could stay in one bunk and the nanny/cousin in the other bunk.

The room occupancy is stated as 4 at WL. If they (illegally) sneak a 5th person in, that person would not have a magic band or any perks that go with staying onsite. I don't recommend that anyone try to get around the rules.

I'm glad you got that figured out!!!

Also, I'd love to have a job that pays $1900 per day!!

Great decision! Your points are right in line with how we think too. Have fun planning!

I think you'll be more comfortable in a Poly room than trying to squish into POR room. We love POR, but not for 5 in a room.
Another thought....what about GF? The rooms are similar sizing, but the big difference is at GF the sink area is outside the bathroom, allowing more people to get ready at the same time. Poly rooms have sink area inside the bathroom. And GF has onsite character meals too. Is it possible to get a good deal at GF too?

_auroraborealis_ and jennw75, what type of consulting are you doing? I may need to consider a career change.

Glad that jennw75 found a solution that works for the family.

I would just add that I still enjoy the monorail as an adult (except when it has lengthy delays) and I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about anyone aging out of it. Enjoy it now, and enjoy it again later, it's still fun.
