What is the best way to get from the Poly over to the Boardwalk area?

Once in Boardwalk area, can you walk to HS? I couldn't really judge the distance looking at the map.

Two possible ways from the Poly to BW. The first would be to hop a bus to DHS, then take the boat or walk from there to BW. The second would be to take the monorail or boat over to the MK, then take a BW bus from there.

DHS is withing walking distance of BW. It should take approximately 15 minutes and there's a marked path along the waterway. There also is boat service between BW and DHS, but you will stop at YC/BC and S/D on the way.

The best way from the Poly to Boardwalk is to drive. If you don't have a car, then a taxi would be fastest. Otherwise, you're stuck doing the bus to somewhere else and then the boat/bus to boardwalk.

We did the luau on 5/21, staying at the BW. Took the bus to MK and the boat over to Poly. From when we left BW to check-in at the luau took exactly one hour.

The vast majority of WDW guests do not rent cars, therefor depend on the buses, boats, monorails. To get from the Polynesian to BW, just head over to MK, then hop on the BW bus there.
Or, take the DHS bus from the Polynesian. When you get to DHS, take the Friendship boat to BW or just walk via the sidewalk. The walk is a pleasant one (unless it's raining or very humid) and takes less than 20 mins. The boat takes about 20+ mins, but that is just the boat ride, it doesn't take into consideration any wait times at the dock.
