We are staying at the Poly on our next trip and I was wondering what you Poly experts like better, a room with a balcony or a patio? Many of the posts I have read prefer a patio when they have small children. I have a Lagoon view and am traveling with a teen and a tween. Would a balcony be better. I am a little worried that there may be a lot of young children on the patio level or is this unfounded? Does one tend to have a better view? Thank you. I am looking forward to going and becoming a Poly convert:):bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Patio, Patio, Patio!!

I was also not sure about whether a patio or balcony would be better, but when we arrived and were allocated a ground floor room it was wonderful. Being able to go straight out on to the beach is unbeatable and I did not notice a lot of young children on patio level anymore than on other floors.

Are you staying in concierge? If not, REQUEST TAHITI! The beach is sooo private down that end and the view of MK is magical.

Have a magical trip!

I was contemplating the same issue. After reviewing Tikiman's wonderful site, I decided to request the 1st floor. I was worried that we may get a 3rd floor room with a palm tree blocking our view. We are staying LVC and time couldn't be going any slower!

we loved our 1st floor room in tahiti

but if noise from above bothers you, go 3rd floor

I think either would be wonderful, but I wanted to share a funny story....

In December of 2002, we stayed at the Poly along with 2 other family members. DH and I were on the 2nd floor with a balcony. Others were assigned a room on the first floor with a patio that faced the quiet pool. They LOVED the location........until it started to rain.

It rained so heavily that opening the patio doors meant letting water into the room, so enjoying the patio was basically out of the question. Also, because of the heavy rains, there were tons of ducks waddling around the grounds. In fact, there were at least three ducks on their patio every morning. My sister in law said she got up one morning to the sound of beaks tapping on the glass! She said that the ducks would just stand there, gazing into the room as if they were saying "can we PLEASE come in??". She finally closed the curtains permanently!

I like both but I do prefer the ground level just so I can walk to the beach. As far as too many kids playing on the ground level, I have never seen the Polynesian grounds be crowded with anything. Maybe a kid or two playing ball or feeding the ducks on the grass but that is about it. This is not the All Stars ;)

Over in Tahiti it is great. There is a larger grass area and there is no path going between the room and the beach. The beach is more private and quiet also.

I have requested the 3rd floor for our Dec 2004 trip. We will be staying LVC. I hope I am not sorry that I have not chosen a patio on the 1st floor. Our children are grown and it will just be the two of us. Being that there is a path between the longhouse and the beach in the Hawaii building I don't want to feel like a "window display" by sitting on the patio. However, I also do not want my view blocked by a palm tree in the 3rd floor. I guess I just want it all! I hope more readers will respond to what may be best for two very young 52 year olds on our 25th wedding anniversary. It is not every day that we can splurge on a 7 night LVC stay at the Poly. By the way, we love kids. Yes, our two kids are grown, but now we have two grandkids. The circle of life!

Tikiman, I am also eagerly looking forward to your July 2004 trip. I know you will fill us in on all the new scoop at the Poly.

Pattymouse,

I would not worry. 3rd floor rooms are great and there is a chance of a partly blocked view from any level. Also even if you request it does not mean you are stuck in only a 3rd floor room. It may be none are available and than it will be a surprise.

I will say that I never felt like I was no display on the ground level. First of all the traffic on the path is not what I would call traffic. A few people here and there. Also the windows are tinted and not easy to see through during the day. At night or when we are changing the curtains are closed. A 3rd floor room will be more private. You may not spend as much time sitting outside or going to the beach anyway in December so maybe a 3rd floor is better. I go out of the room often and sit in the hammock or just stand on the beach and watch the things going on.

I stayed at the Polynesian a few years ago and enjoyed it. I had room 1913 in the Tokelau building and it was considered a "garden" view, but I had a wonderful view of the lagoon and the Grand Floridian. I found little traffic by my patio, found it pretty quiet and enjoyed sitting out there. It was a very quick walk to the beaches & quiet pool and a short walk to the main pool & building. Below is the picture of the view I had, as well as the room.
