Poly Points for Current Owners?

Hey All,

I have so enjoyed vicariously vacationing with you over the years. Thank you to everyone who has shared a bit of the Magic that they brought home after a visit.

I am absolutely determined to buy at Poly. I would appreciate any thoughts you more experienced "DVCers' may have on this: It's my understanding that typically new resort points are offered first to current owners, then to the general public. Should I buy a small (tiny) contract at another resort (25 points at SSR for example) in order to qualify for the "pre-sale" or is this just me being an impatient guy who will be able to buy Poly points at the same price but just a few weeks later?

Thanks in advance for any perspective you may be able to lend to this.

God bless!!:cool1:

You would need to determine the cost savings for being an existing owner.

I caution you about being so excited about a resort that doesn't even exist yet. We found out that buying a resort pre-opening can be a mistake. We thought that we would love BLT so we bought, but now we don't really care to stay there.

Wow...that's one of the first negative things I have heard about BLT. Sorry that it worked out that way, and the advice is welcome. We have stayed at the Poly a handful of times and have long considered this our "home resort". I hope this will be the case with the DVC at Poly, but I guess the risk is still there.

I think spending $3500 or more for those 25 points is a high price to pay for being a few weeks impatient.

You'll either pay $130 direct for those points at Disney or prob $90 or more resale because it's a small point contract. Even then, it might be impossible to find resale and push sale through to closing if Poly goes on sale in the Fall.

And I thought 50 points was the minimum to buy direct these days, but that apparently changes all the time.

I wouldn't do it.

You need to make sure that you will be happy with the DVC operations, the difference in DVC and cash rooms, waiting on hold for 5 to 50 minutes to talk to member services. Their rules, policies and restrictions.

The resort design, the resort DVC design, the room design, location, and views need to also be considered, pretty hard to do if you haven't stayed there.

At BLT IMO the theme park views are over-rated, the resort was constructed of furnishings and material which has not stood up well. The last 2 years since being sold out, the dues have increased 6% plus each year.

And remember all you are buying is points and the right to book a hotel room starting at 11 months before check in. The points are good for 50 years then you give them back.

Agree with the others that buying a small contract simply to buy Poly earlier would be unlikely to benefit you.

VGF was pre-sold to members for $5 less per point than when it went to general sales. And it didn't open for use earlier- everyone who bought early enough had access to try to book a room on opening day.

Unless you're planning to buy a very big Poly contract, it is likely that the closing costs on your theorized 25 point "extra" contract would chew up a lot of this potential discount. No one knows, of course, if a discount will again be offered, or how much, when poly starts selling.

The only reason I could see to do this would be if your overall DVC ownership plan specifically included this tiny contract to use at another resort, for early booking advantage every second or third year. If you didn't have that plan, then your idea sounds like way more effort and cost than it would be worth.

At VGF they opened sales to current members at $145 per point and then a month later raised the price to $150 and then allowed new buyers to purchase without incentives.

I would think the OP would need to consider if a $5 per point savings on a larger contract would offset the purchase of a small resale contract at SSR.

I am not sure I would do it, but if the OP's Poly contract is for a large number of points it could be a factor.

Sounds like I am just being impatient (not an unusual thing for me).

I will keep an eye out for Poly starting to sell and go from there.

we had friends do exactly this for Grand Floridian....they were glad they did, as the resale market then improved and they resold the small contract with a profit. All of our small add ons have increased in resale listing prices, and according to the ROFR thread, they are selling at or close to asking price. Good luck with whichever decision you reach, and enjoy Poly!
