I am trying to decide between Poly GV and AKL CL I have stayed at both and like them both for different reasons, I am hoping to go to WDW first week in Dec. 2010 and cannot decide on which one I would like to stay at. Where would you stay if this was your choice? Thanks.

I would go with the Polynesian because in my opinion they have a better theme, overall location, more transportation options and bigger rooms.

CR resort fan 4 life, I see you are heading to WDW tomorrow, have a great time and be safe. Here is a little pixie dust for a safe trip.pixiedust:

I have done both and would much rather go to the Poly than the AKL because of the location

That would be a hard choice! We love AKL, and sitting on your balcony watching the animals while having your morning coffee is special. We haven't stayed at The Poly yet, but booked for next month. We are looking forward to our first stay there! Being on the monorail to MK, and a walk to Epcot monorail is pretty convenient. Plus larger room size.
Have fun deciding!
You've stayed at both, which do you like best?

Although the theme at AKL is great, I would rather do Poly for the location and being on the monorail. If I were in your shoes, I would also consider doing a split stay (say like 2 nights at AKL and 5 nights at Poly for example). That way you could get the experience of both. :thumbsup2

I like them both for different reasons, that is why I am having such a hard time deciding. Have a great trip you will love the Poly.

These two resorts (and the type of room) are very different. It's hard to put them against each other. First of all, they have two very different themes. African vs. Hawaiian. Both are heavily themed, so you can't go wrong. People talk about the distance AKL is from the parks/rest of WDW. This is true; however, I've noticed that AKL's transportation is one of the best out of all the resorts. Their buses are always on time and it's nice to have a ~20 min (give or take where you're going and the time of year) non-stop bus ride (for instance, Kidani and AKL are the only pick ups for some of the parks. This compared to staying at a resort that shares with other resorts (S/D, YC, BC) or a resort with multiple stops (SSR) is a big diff. Especially at night. I hate being on a bus and it stopping every 5 min and blinding you with the bright fluorescent lights. I'd much rather have a non-stop ride. Less chances of being accidentally pushed/trampled when people get on/off. Note that the resorts I mentioned are subject to change. Each bus schedule is different depending on how busy WDW is and the resort you're staying at/where you're going. However, it is nice that Poly has multiple forms of transportation to choose from and the option of the TTC.

Both resorts have amazing restaurants. Poly is closer to more restaurants (on the monorail loop) and the parks. However, Boma and Jiko are two of the best restaurants in WDW, imho.

Types of rooms... AKL concierge is CONCIERGE. So you have the plus of pre-park planning/itinerary help. The Sunrise Safari is a MUST-DO if you're staying here. It's so convenient. The savannah view rooms are beautiful, and something that you have to experience. The floor that concierge is on has one of the best locations on the safari in terms of seeing the animals. I have read about beautiful Poly GV's as well, but in my opinion, I'd rather look at live giraffes and other animals versus some grass (be it well manicured grass) and plants and flowers and other longhouses. The concierge option is great because of the food offerings. They are so good! The food was so plentiful that we were not on the DDP on that, and will not be on our next trip in a few weeks as well.

So with all this reasoning (I noticed that you've stayed at both), I'd personally pick AKL Concierge again. I feel like it's more bang for your buck. Furthermore, I'd love to stay at Poly, but the theme doesn't really appeal to us. We frequent real tropical locations in Asia every year and it's kind of hard for Disney to pull of the magic for us (although they do give it their all, of course) at the Poly. However, if you were to tell me that you had a lagoon or MK view at the Poly, I'd prob pick the Poly because I've never stayed at a resort with a view of Cinderella's castle. :)

I am actually debating these 2 resorts myself,,,Having stayed at AKL CL & not Poly CL i am leaning towards Poly CL:thumbsup2 Last time i stayed at AKL CL i was impressed with the all the offerings in the Club lounge but i have since heard that the Hors D'oeuvres have been drastically reduced.

Not sure if any of this helps:)

Check out my tickers! I couldn't decide, either, so we're going to have to split it...thanks to my darling hubby MainStreetFireman (swoon)!

We are planning to do MK, DHS and Epcot during our Poly stay. Then we will head over to AKL and do AK, maybe a water park, maybe DTD, but mostly just explore and enjoy AKL, relax, soak in the hot tubs (not available at Poly).

If I were going in December, I might commit the whole time to AKL, since part of the Poly charm is that volcano pool, which you might not be able to enjoy in December. But you could enjoy the hot tubs and the CL lounge at AKL on chilly evenings. Also, I hear the holiday decorations are spectacular at AKL!

Thanks everyone, I think I have decided to stay at AKL CL, I just love seeing the animals and having a fireplace in the lobby is a nice touch for December.

We visited AKL the first week of December this year. You will LOVE the Christmas decor. It was breathtaking! Enjoy your stay.
