Poly Concierge/Refurbishment

Thinking of staying at Poly Concierge in May.
If Hawaii is going down for refurbishment in June, what shape is it in? Has anyone stayed there recently? Does the building/rooms look tired, or is it that it's just time to do some upgrades? Would appreciate a objective opinion.
DH is extremely picky (anything under 4 stars is roughing it to him)
I really need to "wow" DH with this one to once and for all convince him that on site is always the way to go (and worth the extra $$$)
Stayed at AKL Concierge last time (really, really liked it) but want a monorail hotel for this short trip.
Also, can you get by with Garden view or is it really worth it for Lagoon view? View isn't that important to us but we really want to try to get a first floor room.
My alternative plan would be Beach Club Villas.

First of all a lagoon view (concierge or not) is worth every penny at the Polynesian. As far as the shape of the Hawaii longhouse it is not in bad shape in fact the rooms were refurbished and painted in the Summer 2001. They are doing rehab because of two things. One is to update and do some changes to the lounge and the second is to cement the space under the rooms at the foundation to reduce moisture like that have done to the other older longhouses. When we were there in July everything looked fine to us and most of the reports I have gotten lately say everything looks good. If you can still get a lagoon view concierge room I think you will be very happy with it. I know some others tried and they were all booked for the time they were going. We usually book 6 months ahead of time. I also think a first floor room is great especially on the lagoon side so you can walk out to the sand.

Booked today and they had all categories of rooms available so no problem (May 8-12 - for DS 5th Birthday on the 11th + bonus it's also Mothers Day!)
If there is anyone else who has stayed in Hawaii recently I would love to hear your opinions.
Now I just have to hope for a AP code!!

We were just there for a week in early January 2003 and I can't see why they are in need of refurbishment. Our room showed no wear and tear that I could see. We had LV and like others say it is worth it. My kids layed out on the hammocks right outside of our room and watched the EP at night. We had a perfect view of the castle.

We were there Jan. 10 - 16th. We stayed in Hawaii for the first time and found it fine. We stayed in Tahiti last year and other than the extra sink, didn't find much difference in the two. I will say that I loved the location of Hawaii, right next to the pool and a hop skip and a jump to the GCH and the boat to MK. The boat is so relaxing and convenient.

I have to agree with the others, LAGOON VIEW!!! I can't imagine staying at the Polynesian without having a wonderful view of the castle!! We have 4 very small children who are on their way to bed by the time the water show starts (9pm), so they still get to see it.

Thankfully, Disney is getting the building refurbished before it looks like it needs it.

Ok this is just my opinion!! We just stayed In Hawaii Jan 4 and 5th and switched to another resort because we were very unhappy with this resort. We felt it seemed worn Also the Cm were not all that friendly (and I think Im a pretty outgoing person) alsoe our room was loud (we were on first floor) also t eh room had a not clean smell. Thisis just my opinion. I feel if this was a 100 a night hotel I may feel different but since I am comparing it to other Disney Deluxe hotels I didnt feel it could compare. I will say the view from the lounge was really pretty!!

We stayed Poly garden view concierge in December of 2002 and lagoon view concierge in December of 2001. Both times we did not notice any worn out in the Hawaii longhouse and rooms at all. As a matter of fact, I noticed that they had added new showerheads this past trip. I will say that our lagoon view was INCREDIBLE, and I think it is definitely worth it! (Our room was #1512 on the first floor.)

We stayed on the third floor, 3507 I think, and it wasn't loud up there. I will admit though, I didn't think most of the CM's were very nice. Melissa helped me out alot via email before we went down.

I wasn't going to say anything because people are people and you never know which ones you will run into. But, please let me know if I'm wrong for getting mad at this:

There were times when I would be coming up to the door and I know you are supposed to use your key to get in, but I would have one baby in a sling, pushing a double stroller with one hand and have a bag or something in the other and the lady at the front desk would just look at me and not open the door with her little button. Now, this was about the 5th day I was there, coming and going with my 4 children (all 4 and under), so I would think she would remember me enough to let me in.

Okay, sorry, but I needed to get that off my chest.

Otherwise, we were happy in the Hawaii building.

We were just there in 3509 & 3511, Jan. 5-11th Lagoon View.
I completely agree about "The View". All I had to do in 3511 was prop a pillow up on the end of the bed and watch the fireworks, castle and just watch all the Disney Magic infront of my eyes. That's where it stopped.
If your husband you say in use to being in a 4* up, he might find it worn. I found it to be worn and it had the "Smell" everyone was complaining about for a while, we burned a candle and that seemed to do the trick. The hallways, well can't do that. It does need updating. Eventhough others feel it is just fine, in our opinion it was needing help. Torn carpet, warn carpet "messes" on the carpet. Crayon on the walls, etc. I won't go into detail but you might want to rethink. Just my thoughts. Don't mean to upset anyone. PM me if you have any questions.

I have clients at the Polynesian lagoon view concierge right now, they called me tonight and are having a great time, I'm sure the rooms aren't falling apart, disney usually trys to refurbish before the rooms are at that point!

I never refered to The Polynesian as "falling apart". Your clients might be happy which we were as well, I was pointing out a few things that were obvious to that person so they had a heads up on things. It's not going down in June for "NO" reason. By no means is it "New", and I never implied that it was Terrible. I was just pointing out that there are some issues that will be changed in June when they rehab. that building. She had stated that her husband was very use to 4* and better, well the conditions of the rooms are neat just not 4*. The room or Building "Never" dampened our Fun. We had fun and the room was fine, just fine though. You have to admit some people expect a lot more for paying those prices and are looking for detailed things about the resort.

Every time we have stayed there, even up till last July, we have never seen anything torn, worn or in need of repair ever in our room. The rehab in June has nothing to do with the rooms. The reason for the rehab is to do some changes to the lounge and desk area as well as fix the foundation. The rooms will be gutted but only because they need to tear through them to get to the foundation and they will do some replacement of the wood exterior and stairs. Nothing in the rooms is much older than a year since they rehabed the rooms and repainted along with other repairs in 2001. I am sure there is a room here and there that has some damage at the Polynesian but a majority of the rooms are not in that condition.

Hi Steve ... do you think it is wise to book concierge during the rehab? When we were there two weeks ago, Chef Dick was hoping for a good space to work with during the relocation. Any thoughts?

I think it will be great over in Tahiti. I am sorry I won't be there to see it. Last time I talked with them they seem to have the plans under control for the move.

Okay gang I just booked the Poly 2/6 - 2/10. I have been reading the posts on this thread and am getting a little nervous about the conditions of the rooms, refurbishment, etc. Can someone tell me which islands have been refurbished and which ones haven't? I would like to request an island which has been refurbished if possible. Thanks for the info.
