I posted earlier about this but wanted to put a poll up...we're booked on the Nov. 24, 2018 repo from NYC to San Juan visiting Tortola and St. Kitts. Worried about the ports still being damaged when our cruise rolls around.

Would you switch to another cruise or keep this one and hope for the best? In your honest opinion do you think the ports may be recovered by Nov. 2018?

Sorry to have posted twice about this today just couldn't figure out how to add a poll to the other post.

Tourist areas will likely be the first back up and running without issue since that's an income source. Also, if things are that bad Disney will likely alter their itineraries, but with over a year to go I think it will be ok.

Thank you and you're right I'm sure it will be fine:)

You are not going for another 12 months. Things should be pretty normalized by then ...
  • But 2017 Huricanne Season goes for another 2 months, and at this point a strong wind that follows the path of Irma and Maria sets things back even farther.
  • And who know what June to November 2018 will bring
I have a cruise booked out of San Juan in January and I am 99% certain that I will cancel it within the week (before PIF date) - because PR will still be hurting in 4 months. But maybe after the Presidents visit tomorrow, more aid from the mainland will be forthcoming. Regardless, the recovery and safety of our citizens in Puerto Rico is of paramount importance, and I don't want to slow that down in any way. If DCL sails out of SJ / PR in January 2018, I will let someone else take my place.

I would keep the one you have booked and book an alternate to lock in the current pricing. I assume everything will be back to almost normal by November 2018 but that way you're covered and you can eventually cancel the one you don't want.

To me, it depends on what is more important to you. Do you really want to see those ports or do you just want to spend some time on the boat? We have an Eastern Caribbean cruise planned for April. I honestly don’t care where we go. I just want to have a nice time.

I really don't care either. We just did the Western on the Fantasy and we've done a 4 night on the Dream so I'd like to do some eastern ports but we're really in for the experience of sailing out of NYC and for it being a Christmas themed cruise. We're spending time in NYC before we leave and I'm so excited about sailing out of New York...the ports are just kind of bonus. The only thing that concerns me is if they ended up detouring to ports in Canada...my husband has a reckless driving ticket on his record and it's viewed as a felony in Canada and you can't travel with a felony on your record unless you have special permission from Canadian officials. As long as we don't get rerouted to Canada I'm fine! Lol

I would have no problem doing a western, but it's the unknown. If I'm going to be converted to a western, I'd love for that to happen before I have to check in and start choosing excursions. We aren't until March, so maybe things will be back on track by then. But it would be nice to know as soon as they can know.

Of course, the other thing is that DCL (and others) may be locked into certain ports for x number of sailings per year. Each one they miss might be costing them money, even though the port or island isn't capable of taking tourists. That could be why the 'wait and see' attitude before changing things. As someone mentioned, if the Fantasy is booked into Grand Cayman every week until the new year, why not just tell people their cruises are changing? Maybe it's because they will avoid making the change if at all possible and it could be contractual, otherwise, why not just finalize new plans?

I'd book a non-Caribbean itinerary, personally. I'd either do a back-to-back in the Bahamas, or do a longer non-Caribbean & non-Bahamian cruise at a different time of year. Next year's hurricane season could be mild or horrific. No way to know in advance & I'd rather just sail somewhere else than deal with the uncertainty, as I'm not a big fan of the Caribbean anyway (visited Tortola in December 2016 and was not impressed). But if your heart is set on the Caribbean, then cruise it, and you'll probably have a great time.
