My family and I were watching a soccer match on a TV at a restaurant last night. DD11 commented on how many people were in the stands. DH said that soccer is more popular in Latin American countries than football is in the US or hockey is in Canada. I agreed with him on the football but not with the hockey. I'm not talking about the number of people that are there watching because soccer stadiums are larger than hockey arenas. I'm talking a general popularity, if that makes sense.

I am Canadian and there is a growing popularity for soccer here. Professionally alot of people watch the English Premier League and have their favourite teams. Recreationally, soccer is one of the most popular sports in my area - for both boys and girls - and there are a number of leagues that now play year round.

I'll agree about soccer and Latin America. It is not unheard of to close banks and stores because a soccer game is on.

In fact, when I went to Latin America, I had a hard time going through customs because the guy couldn't pry himself away from a telivised soccer game :rotfl:

Look at my name - look at my sig - You have my answer = )

Glory, Glory Man United!!!!

We are Canadian but, oddly enough, my boys do not play hockey - we're a soccer only family. That's not to say that we don't watch hockey - that we certainly do, we just don't play it ...

NickUnited - what happened to ManU on the weekend?

OUCH JULIE! OUCH - please do not tell me you are a CITEH fan!!!!

Honestly - I feal what will happen to my beloved with Glazer taken them over - I fear they will fade. I actually had to sell the shares I had in United - I was so upset. I did buy into the breakaway club FC United. They are making headlines over there.

PM me to chat some footie!

I said hockey - because currently there is professional hockey being played and that has a regular fan base (albeit smaller compared to years before the lockout) following - so as entertainment it is more popular.

Soccer as a sport vs entertainment, has a bigger following with kids and parents because many more will grow up playing in a soccer league than a hockey league - why? - it's cheaper (significantly), it's outdoors which leads to more fun for the spectators as well - kids hockey arenas are nowhere near as plush as those of the pros.

So it depends really on what you mean by popularity. BTW we are a hockey house here - no soccer.

the MLS is a professional soccer league and there are plenty of fans that come out to the games.

Hockey for me. Although as a mom, soccer would be a much cheaper choice than hockey for my kids.

I voted for soccer. My kids play both soccer and ice hockey but I imagine as the hockey becomes more intense they may drop soccer.
