A little ironic since a virus took down the OP's Mac, which is why he's looking for a new computer.

Yeah, they aren't really "resistant to viruses" but more they used to not be targets for the virus makers because of the relatively small user base. Since that has grown, viruses are more common.

ANY computer on the internet can be subject to a virus. It is nonsense to say one type of computer is a better product and less likely to get a virus. Also seems most computer/software companies really don't care about preventing viruses from infecting their machines. But then again they will want to sell you various products to prevent those problems............LOL.

A little common sense online goes a long way regarding virus prevention. DO NOT open unknown attachments in emails from dubious sources is one good example.

Yes, the number one most effective anti-virus measure sits in the chair in front of the computer!

But everybody remembers 20 years ago when that was the line repeated by every Apple Fanboy. Macs don't get viruses.

IT WORKED! I had to zero all bytes and get the OS reinstalled by the guys at the Genius Bar, but I'm finally rid of it!

They didn't then.
There were only a handful of virus written to affect MacOS for a long, long, time. During that same time period there were thousands of virus for Windows with new ones written daily.

And everybody that had any understanding of viruses understood that was because of the small user base. As the user base and market share grew, more and more viruses showed up. That hasn't been talked about and people remember the line from 20 years ago.

The small user base being the reason has most definitely been talked about as the main reason for the lack of interest in writing virus for MacOS.

It may not have been in the headline of stories in the past though and so many people only read the headlines and make up the facts of the story themselves based on the headline.

If you’re already comfortable with Mac, a newer MacBook Air or Pro could be a smooth transition, especially if you value simplicity and reliable performance. However, if you’re leaning toward Linux, Ubuntu is a solid choice—it’s user-friendly for beginners and can do just about everything a Mac can, though it might take a bit of time to adjust to its quirks. I’ve used both systems, and Ubuntu surprised me with how fast and versatile it is, even on older hardware.

When I bought my last laptop, I looked for ways to cut costs and found effortless savings on hardware thanks to this German coupon website. It saved me quite a bit on accessories and upgrades, so it’s worth checking out for discounts if you decide to go the Linux route.

If budget is your main concern, a well-built Linux laptop could be your best option—it’s cheaper and offers great performance with some patience to learn the system.

I voted for a Mac-whatever mainly because my current laptop is an old Mac that my sister used for years and then gave to me when my Surface died of battery bloat after barely three years.

I've used this Mac laptop for years myself now, without incident.

My DH has a very old Mac laptop that still works although it's completely outdated. These machines are extremely well made. I say this from personal experience.
