I never really thought of checking that it was locked. Never dawned on me that it could be closed but not locked.
I walked into a hotel room in Dallas post-COVID, and both connecting doors were wide open and the connecting room was still not in use (no bed linens, toiletries, nothing) I could have locked the connecting room's entry door and had both rooms all to myself.

I open the fridge immediately to put things in. Then I just look around quickly.

I mean it’s never been unlocked and this is a part of my crazy paranoia overly cautious nature but…ain’t no way I’m being murdered on vacation because I didn’t check to see if a door was locked!

This happened to my brother at OKW several years ago. He had booked a 1BR and both connecting doors were open when they got to the room. He thought maybe he had gotten an upgrade but I told him that it was more likely that the room had been a 2BR lockoff for the previous guest and housekeeping had not closed the connecting doors when they did the turnover cleaning. Sure enough, a new guest was assigned the studio a couple of days later. I guess it's a good thing he never moved into it.

I have found the connecting door unlocked on my side before, but the studio next door was not occupied, and it was locked on their side. That is why I always double check...no one wants a new guest in the studio next door entering our room, even by accident.

I've also has a new guest try to enter our room in the middle of the night....,not specifically the guest's fault, the fromt desk had somehow double assigned the room, even though we'd been there a few days already. And apparently, it was already the second occupied room the new guest had been assigned to that night. And it was late, we were asleep. So always be sure to lock and overlatch your main entry door at night. The front desk gave us a meal at Olivia's for that.

The crazy thing was, it was right at the end of the pandemic and the adjacent room wasn’t even back online. I mean, it hadn’t seen a guest in months. Bare mattresses, no towels, no toiletries in the bathroom, nothing. My guess is the one I was in was one of the first in that floor to be booked again and they were only brining rooms online as needed.

In the other thread, I had shared that we walk the villa and perform a quick visual inspection of the room. While we have never timed ourselves, I would estimate that it takes less than 5 minutes, certainly no more than 10 minutes, to check the room. Upon arrival, we check the outlets near the beds to ensure they work. This is easily done because we carry our USB cables with us in our bookbags. Typically after the outlets, we check the refrigerator, to see if it feels cold and sounds like it is running, lower the toaster lever to see if it warms, and start the microwave for a few seconds. Please know that we do not meticulously pour over every item in the room, but do quickly check the items that we will use most.

Haven't seen the other threads so after I respond I'll have to go look.

For us, we immediate check for bedbugs. Then we check air conditioner and fridge. And just a general walk through to make sure nothing looks amiss.

This is basically what we do, and also checking the connecting door. It doesn’t take that long and we prefer to take note of any major issues before we’ve fully settled in.

When we arrive, we walk in the room and head straight for the balcony just to see what view we have and say, "Nice!" Then we head to the parks or a sit down meal - that's it. If there is are issues within the room, I'll deal with it as it happens. For instance, on our last trip we were in a value 1 bedroom - loved it. Anyway, the next morning I went to use the microwave. It wouldn't work as the touch pad panel was literally coming off the front of the oven. I carried on preparing my breakfast (not using the microwave obviously), and when we went out to go to the parks, we stopped by the main desk and reported the issue. When we came back in the afternoon for a break, the microwave had been replaced. So yeah, I just deal with things as, or if, they appear. Can't be bothered to do an inspection of sorts. I'm always just happy to be there.

Once bitten, twice shy.

2019 BLT 2 bedroom dedicated; daughter’s sweet 16 trip.

Doing a dark load of laundry; happened to open washer to add an item and it’s filling with HOT water! I double checked the settings and I has set it correctly (dark colors or cold water - whatever was correct). We happened to be there when maintenance came. He scratched his head and said he’d never seen that unit at BLT. Whoever installed it hooked up the supply lines backward.

I wondered how many before me unknowingly washed their darks in hot water and couldn't’ figured out why their clothes felt so tight. Too many Mickey Bars?

Happens more often than you'd think. I'm a general contractor and it's a pretty common occurrence.

I was once in a law office on maybe the 60th floor of the US Bank Tower in LA (third tallest building west of the Mississippi) and went to use the restroom. Sat down on the toilet (won't get graphic) and immediately felt like I had a fever and was uncomfortably warm. Soon realized the whole toilet was warm and that the water in the bowl was actually hot. Someone had obviously done some service or replacement of plumbing in that restroom and had reconnected the toilet incorrectly (which is a pretty tough task considering there shouldn't even be any hot water lines anywhere near that part of the restroom).

I really don't do any checking of the villa in any meaningful way. I do first turn the AC down and make sure it's working - that's the only thing that would elicit instant calls to maintenance or needing to switch rooms...and at some point, I'll check that the adjoining door on my side is locked, usually just before leaving the room the first time. Of course, I get the chance to see that the fridge is working when I load my stuff in it - if it was warm inside, that would be a call to maintenance. That's about it - I don't check or test any other appliance.

As to the adjoining door thing - never had an issue with it being open from both sides before...but at OKW, I did have an incident checking in one time years ago - front desk gave me my room assignment, 2nd floor, 1-bedroom near Hospitality House...hauled two suitcases up the stairs, opened the door with the key card, started hauling my suitcases towards the 1-bedroom, when the very surprised looking father and young daughter sitting on the couch looked both confused and a little concerned. Apparently, they double-booked the room as they had checked in earlier that afternoon. I reasoned with them that I was not a psycho-killer, given the luggage and key card which opened the door and girlfriend coming up the stairs with more bags - so was able to use the villa phone to call the front desk and report the issue. Many apologies to both of us, I was told to leave my car and luggage at the building and return to the front desk. Got the new room assignment, same building, more apologies, a $100 voucher, and the next two days gifts delivered to the room (chocolate covered strawberries and champagne, micky balloons and hats with universal fast passes for both of us). I ran into the father the next day and we laughed about the incident, and he confirmed he got the $100 voucher as well. All that and I wasn't even complaining - I laughed off the incident and appreciated their apologies - all the extras they threw in were very unexpected and wonderful...though I wonder if Disney would do all that unprompted today!
