OP, I am please that you and your husband were able to reach a good compromise, that's wonderful!

To all the posters who allow their dogs on their furniture (and I have been known to do that too), I saw last week that dogs are carriers for the Merca virus along with e coli, etc, and that having them on the bed is one of the things doctors are now saying can cause humans to contract disease, as we are basically sleeping in the bacteria/viruses that they are carrying when we do. Does that information affect your wanting the dogs on the furniture? I ask because I am still kinda processing and deciding what impact that info has on ME... the studies are saying no kissing dog, no dog licking human faces, and no dogs on beds for health, though...

I actually think having dogs and their germs in my house makes my immune system stronger. People are getting sicker and sicker and bacterial strains stronger and stronger because of our overuse of antibacterial products. So, that's the long answer. Short answer, no, this info doesn't influence my decision to allow my dogs on my furniture or beds.

What is the Merca virus exactly? MRSA, maybe?

I know the study that you speak of and it is controversial and filled with coulds and maybes. Common sense goes a long way. I think it's easier to catch something from my children. The actual risks of infection from dog to man is low.

But really its a personal choice. Nothing anyone says would make me change my ways. I'm 46 and have had dogs all my life and they sleep on my bed. I must be very lucky!

No, that doesn't change my opinion that, for my household, pets are permitted on the furnature and have free run of the home. I'm not big on "doggie kisses" but that's mainly because I've seen where my dog licks herself and really am NOT interested in sharing! I've lived in a home with dogs that have a free run since my parents brought me home from the hospital as infant, and no one in my family has gotten sick from it. Obviously if someone has an immune disorder, that's different, but I personally feel that every day exposure to germs is for our bennifit in the long term. The more we are exposed to, the stronger our immune systems tend to be.

I admit...I have not read this whole thread...but as soon as I read the title I thought "Uh Oh"!!!!

Here is a link to a thread I started a few months ago. I don't mind sharing it because I truly feel some of the people that disagreed with me ended up looking foolish. Like, people that said a dog should never live outside (on my thread) were posting on someone else's thread a few days later, saying if you do not have a yard, you should never own a dog, that dogs need yard. Apparently they are thinking dogs need a PERFECT situation that is in line with whatever *their* idea of a perfect situation is. With that thinking, no one should have kids, or be able to adopt kids. My thread was about rescuing dogs that have already lived outside, and never lived inside. I was told that I was still wrong, and basically that if I cannot provide an ideal (in their eyes) situation, the dogs are better in a shelter and/or euthanized.
