"On February 14th we will be celebrating "Friendship Day". Please dress your children in pink, purple, or red. We'll me making Jello treats to share among all our friends".......

So says the letter I just got from daycare.

I DESPISE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! ( well not the kind that stops people from being hurt, but the kind that eminates from idiocy, and the need to impose your will on everyone else. )

EDIT: see post #30 for my explanation.

Well when you think about what Valentine's Day is REALLY about...I never understood how it got to be a day for sweeties. :confused3

Well that's just stupid. So what's the reasoning (if you can call it that) behind changing Valentines' Day into "Friendship Day"?

I don't mind that. Most people hate Valentine's day anyways, especially if you are single!!

I'm not, but we don't celebrate it anyways.

Besides, it's a cute way for kids to celebrate the day, which I don't really consider a holiday. :)

It celebrates saint valentine who performed secret marriages - what did you think it was about?

Maybe this is just to discourage young kids giving out Valentines. Always seemed kind of odd even when I was a kid, and made even worse by the rules that have to be enforced.

There are many different theories as how Valentine's Day came to be. In ancient times, February was the month of fertility. Valentine's Day may have come later as a way to incorporate this practice into the church. So yes I guess it is fitting to sweeties, but I don't believe the origins are truly family friendly. Anyway, I don't care what people celebrate. And at a young age, what is wrong with friendship day and how is that too PC?

Here is some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Valentine's_Day

I just got a letter from 4th grade dd's classroom yesterday saying the same thing. But theirs says on Valentines Day they will be having a "Celebrating Friendship Party". UGH.

I remember some kids really getting their feelings hurt if some people left them out. :( I really think it's just another popularity contest.

Which is exactly why I don't like this holiday at all. All it is (to the younger set) is another way to measure popularity and point out that you aren't.

At my son's schools they have the kids bring in valentines for all the kids in the class. Why can't this be done, or not celebrate altogether rather than invent their own dumb holiday.

Yes we had to bring in for everyone as well, but some people would get fancier cards and maybe some treats. I just don't think this belongs as a school event.

And before you say it was me that this happened to, no it was not. I was a sensative child and I hated to see anyone upset especially others who were all ready shy, ackward or were thought of an outcast.

They do this in my daughters class but the PTA has a thing where for 1.00 you can have a chocolate lollipop with your message attached delivered to anyone in the school grades K-5....they end up selling about 600 of them! My daughter picked out 8 kids to send them to..some in her class and some not. She hopes she does not get any since they are made out of those wafers you melt at home (fake chocolate) and she is a real chocolate snob, only like the real stuff!

Same here - our school has always had Valentines parties and if your child brings cards they have to have one for each child. No one is left out and no one gets more cards then anyone else. I figured that is the way all schools do it. I guess not though by some of the replies here.

Miss Ava's preschool is having a Valentine's Day Party and the kids are required to bring in 14 cards with only the child's name who is giving the card on it.

Those little boys in Ava's class will be real excited about the princess Valentine's.

My kids always had a preprinted list of names for their Valentines in school. Part of their "homework" was to cut and paste the names onto the envelopes. Every child got a card, no feelings were hurt. I can't remember if that's how it was when I was in school, but I don't think so. I want to say we only gave cards to those that were our friends. Obviously the whole thing never tramatized me if I can't even remember how we did Valentines back then. The only thing I remeber was we had a huge box in one classroom, it was covered with tin foil and a big red heart on it. That was where we dropped our cards.

We really don't celebrate the day, never really did. I can't see paying a fortune for flowers or anything just because it's a day to celebrate love. When the kids were little they got a little chocolate heart from us, but that was it.

Now this is a fine example of the popularity contest taking place with this holiday.
