My cousin and her husband are leaving tomorrow and she had a question I cannot answer. Her DH is a police officer and his department requires him to carry his gun at all times. Is this allowed in the parks? Do they need some sort of clearance?

I was going to say, I never heard of a dept. requiring someone to carry at all times. My dh is in law enforcement, and he is ALLOWED to carry, but never REQUIRED to carry - on his own time.

DH is a retired police captian and according to him, you are a police officer 24-7 but are not required to carry the gun the same. This is a rookie idea. They all go through it.

In Texas you are recommended to carry at all times and are a Police Officer 24-7 but you recommendation ceases at the state line. Something about jurisdiction gets in the way since most Police Officers are lisenced by the state.

I was going to say, unless he is a Florida State police officer, or an Orlando cop, then he'd be out of his district/jurisdiction, and shouldn't have to carry his gun.

I think it is a rookie thing! :goodvibes He worked so hard and was top in his class and is so excited about his job that he commented to his wife about the gun and she was worried. He said he isn't going to take it to the parks, so it is a non issue now. Thanks for all the input!

Daughter's a cop and has been one for 10 years. She WORKS for the police dept-they don't OWN her. She keeps her's at home, esp. on vacation.

Definitely a rookie thing, my father was a cop for 10 years, he went through it, he watched all new cops go through it. I don't know any cop at his old station that ever did that for more than 6 months because they got ragged on quite a bit. ;)

I don't have any info with WDW but I'd assume rules for all parks to be similar.

Astroworld (no longer exists but was in Houston) used to have metal detectors that you went through- anything picked up there that was not allowed in the parks- guns, knives, etc would be stored and could be picked up out side of the park on your departure.

I do recall going one time and having a police officer on a family vacation carrying his gun and being quite upset that he couldn't carry it in. I believe the workers there pointed out that he'd be on an even playing level because they take the guns from everyone on the way in- so there was no need for him to carry it while in the park.

I know my dad got a pocket knife taken once- he wasn't thrilled- it wasn't a large knife by any means- but wasn't allowed- he had to drop it at their security station outside the park and got a receipt to get it back later. When he returned to pick it up the staff member said they rarely get people returning for items and she said that any firearms left and any illegal items were picked up by the city police that night- if the owners wanted them later they had to go through the police.

My DFather's been a cop for almost 30 years and carries CONSTANTLY. It was annoying growing up (even though no one else knew he was carrying we still found it embarassing).. He's plainclothes, so for him it's not part of the uniform, it's part of his daily wear. He once said not carrying would be like forgetting to put on his underpants. :rotfl2: That said, I think he carried when we went to WDW, but it's not as though anyone but him would know.

But, yeah, it's not like it's a requirement, and MOST cops don't walk around with their guns on their days off- AFAIK, that is.

Dh is a police LT and he leaves his gun at home whenever we go out. He says that when he's off he's off .... and he DEFINITELY won't be taking it on vacation!

Plus, what a hassle to have to go through airport security with it!
