Police driving behind you, does it make you nervous

When I worked in tv news, our crew cars were big white Chevy Caprices. They looked exactly like unmarked cop cars (and with the NYP press plates people assumed we were cops). I LOVED driving those cars because traffic ould part like the red sea for me wherever I went. If somebody slow was in front of me, all I had to do was pick up my two-way radio and pretend to talk into it and they would move out of my way super fast.

I work in TV news, most of our cars are fire engine red with the station name on them. Aways getting mistaken for fire trucks. Funny, we have big debates about having marked cars, some feel it's unsafe. Our unmarked cars are Ford Explorers with antennas all over the roof, just like the CSI officers drive. I'd rather be in a bad neighborhood and have folks KNOW I am TV, rather than THINK I might be a cop.

Makes me nervous as well. In fact, I was more nervous when one was behind me that put his lights and siren on :scared1:. I pulled over wondering what I did wrong when the cop went right past me. Turns out he got a call at that moment. Thankfully, it wasn't anything I had done <phew>.

No I don't get nervous. What is funny if they pull beside me and then haul butt just to get away from the slow traffic that he caused by everyone freaking out.

yes, me too.
skywalker, I feel the same way about the boarder crossing. I have nothing to hide but I feel it.

When I'm in my own car, I get nervous, too. And I make sure to drive at or below the speed limit. However, this is probably VERY annoying to the police officer or whoever else might actually be behind you. I say this because, for work, I frequently drive vehicles that are easily mistaken for police cars (crown vic or SUV with red lights on top.) Anyway, I hate to get behind people who immediately slow down by 10mph. I mean I totally understand because I do it too. But it still is annoying when I just want to get to where I'm going.

:lmao: :thumbsup2 I think this too. The police are probably thinking will you QUIT slowing down? I want to get to the station to do the shift change and go home!

So, although I do tend to slow down, if I'm heading in the direction of the police station before their turn, I don't worry about it too much (can't really go that fast anyway -- I'm in a minivan and it's going up a hill!!! Not like I could really speed even if I wanted to!)...I almost always see them get into the left turn lane to go to the police station.

Now what REALLY makes me nervous is seeing a police car not waiting for a turn (just parked) and as soon as I pass they pull out onto the street and are following me. THAT freaks me out.

Of course, the ONE time I got stopped I didn't even realize it was a police car & have no idea how long he had been following me but I got pulled over (I freaked DD out because I said "We are being followed" a little before getting pulled over. She didn't realize I meant by police, thought it was a bad guy so she had her hairbrush ready to I don't know throw at the person I guess!) because I was going "too slow" -- HEY...it was a 2 lane highway, he could have passed. I wasn't even thinking holiday weekend (it was labor day, doesn't even register as a holiday to me)...but he thought I might be drunk. The poor guy didn't know he stopped someone who is a teatotler and it took me about several minutes into the conversation to figure out why the heck he stopped me!!! I thought it was for speeding even though I was pretty sure I wasn't (they sit on that street constantly clocking people). Even AFTER being asked if I had been drinking, I was STILL waiting for him to explain to me WHY I was stopped...light out? speeding? WHAT? WHY am I pulled over? "when are you going to tell me what is going on?" :rotfl2: Then it FINALLY dawned on me after a few more questions (and who knew the white line was the FOG line -- never heard it called that so I REALLY looked him like he was the one losing it!). I'm sure he thought I was insane when I finally went "OH...I thought you were pulling me over for speeding & I didn't think I was!?" My DD thought it was hysterical though & still gives me a hard time. She especially lost it when he asked if I was texting then because I barely text while sitting still much less driving. It was late, I was tired and I was TALKING to said DD and I happened to know a shortcut to where we were going which happened to be an industrial area even though it was super late (so from the outside I suppose it did look bad).

SO...no way on earth will I be going BELOW the speed limit with a police behind me....if I'm going to be pulled over, I'd rather it be for speeding. At least we won't have this bizarre conversation exchange we had that night. I figure even if I'm going a couple miles over, it should be fine.

My husband says, and I quote, "I'm not gonna lie, it's a little amusing. But it's annoying when I need to be somewhere, because everyone slows way down."

;)

This is right!! My dh HATES it when people do that because everyone slows down and he gets stuck in a long line of cars...I dont mind if they are behind me because I most of the time have one in the seat next to me lol I never even notice them anymore!

I wonder if that's the difference between those who actually follow the rules and those who say they follow the rules but always think they have a good explanation for when they are caught not following the rules?

The ones who always follow the rules never get nervous when there's a policeman around.

Hmm...something for me to think about. Juicy!

Not true for me. Might be true for others.

I get nervous, because I know very well that weird things could be going on with your car that you don't know about.

First time I was pulled over, he noticed me because he didn't think I had a front license plate, and then I was so incredibly nervous that he thought I was impaired.

It was my dad's car, I was borrowing it while in college two states away. My dad had had some issues with driving, and had managed to cause the front plate to be entirely bent under the car. Not sure how he did that, but once I stopped stuttering and stammering and shaking from nervousness and fear (it was after 2am, I was alone, it was cold and I was wearing light clothes b/c I'd been working, at the bar I worked at, where it was warm inside) and he realized I wasn't on something, it was simple enough to go and pull the plate out from under the car.

So anything could be going on with the car, or your speedometer could suddenly have gotten messed up, etc etc.

We drive a silver Grand Marquis. We get one of two responses as we drive along. Either people get REALLY aggressive and rude, thinking that I'm an old-lady driver, or they go really slow, thinking I'm a cop.

I was going the posted speed limit around a tricky offramp I take to get home (and I think they have it listed at too high a speed, honestly), and this big pickup with military stickers all over it was incredibly aggressive, passing me on the right just before that lane ended, and even flipped me off WHILE honking, a few weeks ago...that's how some people like to treat what they perceive to be the elderly (or the cops I suppose)...I thought I expected more from the profession the person seemed to be stating he was in from all the stickers, but I guess not...

Not as much as when DOT gets behind me.I drive a box truck and when DOT pulls you over youre gonna be there a easy 1/2hr while he/she check every inch of the truck.Realy stinks when you have a appointment to meet a customer.

I had a small town cop follow me through Bellevue Michigan this Summer. He was really out of line, right on my bumper. I would have stopped right in the middle of the road and asked him what the ^%$# was his problem except for one thing. We had several cases of Everclear alcohol in the boot, just purchased in Indiana! We need it to make our products but it's not sold in Michigan.

I was sweating bullets all the way to the city limit sign where he turned around.

Tell me you were making Hand Grenades fo take to the Bay! If you don't understand I have a funny story to tell you.

only when I'm smoking a joint and drinking a beer :hippie:

it's a joke

I don't. What's the story?

To answer the questions we make tinctures and decoctions out of herbs such as echinacea and St. John's wort and 95% alcohol works best. You're only supposed to carry two bottles over state lines and we had 7 cases!

Yes, it makes me nervous. I even turn down my stereo so I'm not distracted. My friends always crack up at me when they see me do that. I just hush them and tell them I need to concentrate. :rotfl:

Yep, I get nervous too. I have even been pulled over twice when the police were driving behind me.

Once, because my sticker on my car was out, which was understandable, but the other time was for nothing! I was driving home late at night, maybe midnight or one-ish, and I was in my neighborhood when I noticed a police car behind me. No big deal, I was about to be at my house. Then he puts his lights on so I pull over and he tells me that my license plate light is out. I had JUST had it changed a few weeks ago so I told him that was odd because it was just replaced. I wanted to check it but he was like, oh, don't worry, and just glanced at my license and let me go... No clue what I did and I wish I had gotten his name because he had no right to pull me over.

Sooo, now I normally slow down a tad and let the police car pass me. I just hate them driving behind me.

We photogs got into a huge debate with station management and the marketing department when they decided to "re-brand" the station and wanted to put big honking stickers on the sides of all the vehicles (most of us had traded in our caprices for chevy blazers). We argued that it would hinder any attempt to do a stakeout (which we did often) and that it would jeopardize us and our vehicle and equipment in the bad parts of town. Station didn't care and made us endure the sticlers anyway.

Many times had a vehicle vandalized or broken into and had equipment stolen and stakeouts were nigh impossible to do. They finally agreed to buy us big white magnets that we could cover the stickers with if we had a story to shoot in a bad area or had to do a stakeout.

yes, it totally makes me nervous too.
A couple of years ago a cop 2 cars behind me turned his siren on. I started to freak wondering if I had done something wrong. I didn't want to evade the police so I pulled over as did the car behind me. Turned out he was getting the car behind me for speeding. He finally came up to my window and was like "are you with her?" I said no and he said, "ok, you can go on your way". :rotfl2: I was embarrassed but hey, better safe than sorry!

Does it make you nervous when you look in your rear view mirror and you see a police car behind you? I dont know why, but it makes me very nervous, even though I am not breaking the law or anything.. I hate that feeling of looking back and seeing one right behind me:confused3 Am I the only crazy person it bothers?:confused3;)

...OMG!!!! Same here - and I don't speed or make any illegal turns and always use my blinkers and drive to the RIGHT of the divider line.....does running over old fogies' canned corn count??? :confused3

Well, it would be pretty hard to speed on your tractor that only does 15 mph, for corn's sake!

Not as nervous as our red light cameras/speed cameras every intersection in our town :scared1:.

Very nervous...and I have never been stopped before in the 26 years I've been driving. Until last Monday night. I accidentally ran a red light, but I swear it was yellow as I went through it. I've never done that before. As soon as I passed the intersection, the lights were flashing in back of me. Crap. I was shaking, getting out my license, registration, insurance (praying my DH put the new insurance card in the van!)...He let me go with a warning, and told me to make my New Years resolution to drive more safely.

And then he followed me to my destination (which happened to be a church. I was going to Zumba!). I was a complete wreck. My hands were on 10 and 2 the entire time and I must have started braking several feet before approaching any light (red or green) LOL:rotfl2:
