Polarized Sunglasses?

Does anyone here feel the need to purchase polarized sunglasses pre-cruise? I was told the glare off the ocean reflection is painful for those with sensitive eyes (me!)

Thanks

I was fine without sunglasses. I didn't think there was a huge difference between being at a pool or being on the ship as far as sun glare.

I do wear sunglasses around all exterior sections of the ship, I find it extremely bright.

If you are on a whale watch.... they are handy to see the sealife.

I loved polarized sunglasses and filters for my cameras. Without glare, polarized glasses are more comfortable.... especially when driving. Good investment if you are a driver.

So affordable too at drug stores. I love them so much.... I even paid for the polarized coatings on my prescription sunglasses.

I've never had polarized lenses, I just wear my usual dark prescription sunglasses. I have very light sensitive eyes, due to a case of Photokeratitis when I was a kid, and have done fine on past cruises without the polarization. However, I do make a point not to spend a lot of time watching the glare on the water etc.

I never leave my house without polarized sunglasses. They really cut down on the glare. One of the neat things about polarized lenses vs nonpolarized, if you're looking at water, the glare is eliminated and you can see in the water. We leave for our cruise in less than 3 weeks, and I'm planning on ordering a pair of prescription polarized sunglasses this week so I can read while sitting outside.

That's the only kind we own. Polarization not only lets you look at the water without eye strain but also lets you look into the clear blue water when at ports and Castaway Cay. You can see into the water and see fish etc. around the docks and Rip Rap. Have a Great trip.

The first time I got polarized sunglasses, I was tripping looking at all the windows on cars as I was driving. You can see the tinting patterns in the glass that are not visible to the bare eye. I also could not read a certain type of sign at an amusement park place unless I stood at just the right angle -- very odd/cool!

The advice from my eye doctor: Protect your eyes. Wear polarized sunglasses when out in the sunshine.

I have been able to find some polarized sunglasses that were not all that expensive. I think I found them at Walmart. Always check them. I do not trust labels.

To check for polarization: hold one polarized lens horizontal, hold another polarized lens vertical against the horizontal one. You should not be able to see through it at all. (You will 2 pair of polarized sunglasses for this test).

I only wear polarized sunglasses because I've developed ptyerygium to my eyes (benign growth visibly next to my pupils). It effectively gets rid of any glare.

When crossing the street.... you can suddenly count the number of fingers the driver is waving at you.

As a driver.... it greatly reduces eye fatigue.... especially reflections on the car hood on a long road trip.

I just purchased my polarized pair (pre cruise) because of how much it will help on out I the water. I lost my last pair :( I invested in a nice quality stylish pair from " Polaroid" brand. They sell them at Dillard's stores. Check them out !!

Also, all Polaroid brand sunglasses come polarized so you don't have to guess which ones are or aren't :)

The Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom "portals" that are outside in the sunshine have polarizing filters on them. I discovered this when I happened to be wearing a pair of polarized sunglasses that were out of phase with the portal filters. It took me a moment to realize why I wasn't able to see the video on the screen when my friend had no issues.

Okay ... I've been lurking on the Disboards for MONTHS now as I've been planning my land & sea adventure for next year, and of all the posts out there, *this* is the one that made me bite the bullet and start an account. LOL...

I'm actually the marketing manager for a major sunglass brand and there is a lot of confusion when it comes to what polarization actually means and the best sunglass when you're on the ocean.

Here's what I would recommend when it comes to selecting sunglasses for your trip ...

1. You get what you pay for. If you invest in a mediocre pair of sunglasses, you can expect mediocre protection. Not all polarization is created equal, so keep that in mind if you're shopping at a Walmart versus a Sunglass Hut.
2. The best way to tell if a pair is TRULY polarized, is ask if there's a polarization demonstrator where ever you're getting the sunglasses ... OR ... look at your smart phone screen and tilt your head. You'll see color vibration happening as a result (more intense blues and reds with a color mix/warble). But think of polarized lenses as Venetian blinds ... parallel light can enter, but the glare bouncing off of the water is eliminated.
3. Since you're ON the ocean, look for something with an AR coating on the INSIDE of the lens. AR is anti-reflective and it'll help cut the glare from the gaps in the sunglasses (assuming you have a 6-base frame, this is less of an issue with an 8-base frame that wraps more around the eyes).
4. With the lens itself, we always recommend going with a BLUE mirrored lens when you're on the water. The lens itself should be grey-based, but with the flash mirror It helps magnify the blue hues of the water and you'll see the caribbean in its truest beauty. The second best mirror would be a gold that will work in tandem with the land and water.
5. While polarization can mess with your vision if you're looking at LCD screens you'll actually feel LESS eye fatigue and increased clarity.

Like you, I have crazy sensitive eyes, so I totally get the importance of protecting yourself. If you want, I can see if I have any samples at my desk tomorrow.

....and MSPeeler, I can't figure out how to send to a private message. *sigh* So shoot me a message if you're interested!

Very helpful info BarbMike821. Just ordered my 11 and 12 year old granddaughters polarized glasses based on your recommendations
