Points usage question?

First, I'd like to thank everyone on this board for all of the help they give. My wife and I just starting thinking about buying DVC yesterday and I've already learned so much from reading this board.

My question is "What do you do if you are a couple of points short of what you need for your stay?" For example, if you have 100 to use and where/when you want to book requires 102 points, can you pay cash to make up the points short or do you have to acquire the points? If the points are needed, is there an exchange where members "share" their extra points with each other or would I have to try to rent them on the Rent/Trade board? (I would assume renting only 2 or 3 points would be difficult to do.)

Thanks

What i do is borrow from next years points usually

If you are a couple of points short you could borrow them from your next use year. Very simple transaction.

If you don't want to borrow points, you can pay cash. But you can't pay cash for the few points you are short. You would have to pay cash for one complete night of your reservation. There may even be a member cash rate available to you.

Or you could find another member who is willing to transfer the few extra points to you that you are short for your reservation. But if you take this route, remember that you can have only 1 transfer in/out per use year. Members charge different amounts of money for each point transferred, but it seems to be about $10-$14 per point.

DVC will not sell you one-time-use pts for cash, so...

1) you borrow pts from the next UY's allotment

2) you have the extra pts transferred into your account
*but you only get 1 transfer per year, either in or out. so finding a transfer, especially for only a few pts, can be tough.

3) you rent the final night from another member
*but you can't call MS about this night's reservation...you are the same as any other renter

4) you add-on a new contract - minimum 25 pts.
*no closing costs but it's still a pretty expensive solution...

oops - forgot one.

5) if available, you could book the final night for cash.

Thanks for the info

Looks like borrowing would be the way to go...I did not know about the limit on transferring points. For clarification, is the the limit 1 transaction(either in or out) or 1 transfer in and 1 transfer out per UY?

Borrowing definitely seems the way to go for your situation.

And the transfer is 1 total. Either in or out.
