Points show on member site, but no paperwork yet--can we use them?

My guide had useful information on this topic. My guess, which may be overly simplistic, is that it would be more useful to have December so you would have more months in which to use any points in the event that you had a last minute cancellation.

Can you give an example please. I am losing my mind.:crazy2: All i know is that we will vacation every earld dec. For your statemnet what month would be most beneficial?
Thanks

If you have a use year of January and you have a reservation for Dec. 1-6 and you have to cancel it for some reason - you cannot bank those points so they will have to be used prior to January 1.

If you have a use year of December and you have a reservation for Dec. 1-6 and you have to cancel it for some reason - you would be able to bank the points or use them any time prior to Dec. 1 of the next year.

Does that answer your question?

not to hijack the thread but have a point question. home base 11month window to reserve all others 7month. what does that mean in regards to every one else? is there one day for all dvc members, jan 1 for example, when everyone is trying to make reservations? if my use year is in dec, how does that help me when someone elses use yr is in feb and all the dec 31 rooms are booked??? please explain thank you. i know its probably something simple that i'm just not seeing or understanding. thanks

I'm not sure I completely understand the question.

Your points don't have to be in your "account" to book a ressie based on them, provided the ressie date is past the date your points hit your account (All this ignoring banking/borrowing).

So, say you have a December UY and you want to book a Dec '08 stay. In Jan '08, exactly 11 months from the date in Dec you're looking to stay, you can call Member Services to book your room. For example:

You want to stay Dec 13th, 2009, you can call to book on Jan 13th, 2009....but, on that day, you can ONLY book Dec 13th and earlier. You couldn't book Dec 14th til the next day. That's why most people call "day by day" to book rooms during busy times.

Even though your '08 points haven't "hit" your account in Jan of '08, they WILL have hit in Dec of '08...so everything works out, according to DVC.

AHHHHHH....This is why you can make a ressie without having all the points already. Hence the reason why you would have different contracts at different resorts. Also giving you time to rent points to fill the ressie. Is renting a giant hassel? Transferring sounds like the way to go if you can do it.Right????

Exactly.

Keep in mind, your 11 month window ONLY applies to the points you own at that resorrt. So if you own 25 points at VWL, you can get 11 month exclusivity (disregarding banking and borrowing, which would triple the number) on 25 points worth of VWL accomodations.

Transferring IS the way to go, but keep in mind you can only make one transfer in, and one transfer out, per year. At least that's what I remember of the rule...it's relatively recent and a more experienced DVC member would need to confirm it.

On renting being a hassle..I don't know.
