Hey guys! I was wondering- if we bought a 100 points... and the place we want to book is say 110 points. Can we buy or rent more directly through Disney? Can you book your stay even if you don't have enough points and pay the difference at the time of booking? Are we better off buying more?

Thanks for your help!!!

If I remember correctly, you can rent through disney up to 24 extra points for the current rate of $15 per point. This can only be done once per year, and you lose home booking advantage by using these points.

Yes. The OTU points can only be used at 7 months, and the room has to be available to everyone at 7 months. You can't block the stay at 11 then swap in OTU at 7.

You can borrow 10 points from your next year, but eventually your borrowing will catch up to you, potentially.

You can purchase up to 24 points per year, and it can be in multiple transactions throughout the year. It used to be once per year, but that changed two or three years ago.

Thank you all! So the only way to get more is to rent points? I guess we're better off buying more from the start? What's a good number to get?

A good number to get is an amount that will cover the unit you want, at the resort you want to book at 11 months, in the seasons you're likely to travel. If you travel yearly, this number will be different than for someone doing a bank and borrow.

OTU points aren't a point rental. Point rentals are an entirely different thing, as are transfers.

 LOL that's how I feel I look as I'm reading all this info!!!! It's definitely a lot to take in and understand! Thank you for your response!

You can bank or borrow points for the times that you need more if that works for you.

Thanks guys!

May I ask, if you waited till 7 months out to pick a resort, do you find you have any trouble getting something different than your home resort? How about at your 11 month home resort? Ever have trouble getting something? Thanks!

Depends on the season. 7 month bookings are difficult in high season. Studios at many resorts can be challenging year round.

If booking at 7 months wasn't a problem, there wouldn't be any reason to buy any resort other than the least expensive.

I have another points question- if we were to wait to buy when we went on our trip in November- will we get points for this year??

Also, does that mean we wouldn't get the following years allotment of points till November of each new year?

Thank you!

If you buy a December UY you would get 2016 points then in December you would get 2017 UY points, but not any other UY. If you buy any other UY you will get 2017 UY Points.

This being said though, make sure you buy the best UY for your travel habits. If you travel to WDW in November, a December UY is a bad UY for you. You want a UY that begins in the first few months of your regular travel habits, because if you have to cancel a trip your points go back in to your account, and aren't put into holding or just lost.

We have a February UY because we have young children and have to go to WDW during the February and April vacation week school schedule, thus we are traveling in the first 3 months of our UY. We also bought a have a June UY which is horrible for our travel habits because it is at the end of our travel habits. If we cancel an April trip, the points go into holding and we might loss them unless we take a trip in May.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! It does! So buying sooner than later is beneficial. What is UY? Sorry, all new to me. Also, so they allow you to tour or stay at a resort you're considering? Thanks again!
