So I'm very new to the DVC thing and have a question.

I've been trying to understand how the points work with expiration and use year. I have a December use year. The next time we plan on going to Disney is December 2010.

My question is if I reserve the room in 2009 for a 2010 trip is that considered banking my points? In other words, if I use my 2009 points for a December 2010 trip and cancel, I couldn't use those points in 2009?

I'm still just trying to figure this out. Thanks ~bR

You have to physically bank your points. They aren't banked automatically. With a December UY, you would have to bank your 2009 UY points by the end of July, 2010. Of course, you can bank them earlier.

For example, you want to book a trip for December of 2010, which is just within your 2010 UY. In this example, you call in January of 2010 to book this. You might have points still in your 2009 UY which you can bank at the time you book your December 2010 vacation so that your banked points will be used first. Or, anticipating that you will be using your 2009 UY points for this 2010 vacation, you might bank them now into your 2010 UY, so that when you call, MS will see the banked points. Make sure that MS uses the banked points first. They are supposed to do this, but sometimes, mistakes do happen.

Once you bank your points into the following UY, the points remain in that UY and cannot be unbanked. The same is true with borrowed points. They cannot be un-borrowed. In other words, banking and borrowing are final transactions.

I hope that I have actually helped and not confused the issue. :)

You need to first bank your 2009 points into your Dec. 2010 use year. When making your reservation ask them to use the banked points first and then any 2010 points. Look at it this way, you will be in your 2010 use year when you are travelling.

If you cancel this trip, you need to use the banked points before November
30, 2010 or you will lose them.

Thanks for the help. That actually makes sense. This whole thing is very confusing still, but I think I'll get the hang of it soon I hope.

However, if you bank 2009 points into 2010 to use for a Dec 2010 vacation and then cancel and decide you want to go during your 2009 UY (Dec. 1st, 2009 - November 30th, 2010) you can always borrow the 2010 points back in to 2009 UY and go.

As others have said, once you borrow those points can't be returned, so doing that does come with a risk. But it is a way to travel after you have banked points you didn't think you would need.

Good luck!

The points banked into the December 2010 use year would have to be used for a stay between 12/1/2010 and 11/30/2011.
