Points needed when waitlisting?

I’m hoping I have this correct, but want to make sure before I do this…

I’m making reservations for September. At this point (7 month) there’s only one resort available that we’d want.

If I book that reservation, but also put in a waitlist request (setting it to replace existing reservation), do I need to have only the points available for the larger of the current reservation or the waitlist, or do I have to have points to cover the reservation, and the waitlist?

Related question - if I make a reservation now, and then see the room that I really want, can I just cancel my existing reservation, and then immediately book the new one?

All this would occur in the allowable time frames - if the room we really want isn’t available at least 5 months ahead of time, we’ll just stay with the existing reservation.

Thanks for everyone’s help!

You don't need the extra points for the waitlist and you surely can cancel your existing reservation and make the reservation on your own if you see the availability. The points go back into the account instantly. Just be aware that availability changes super fast.

Just the larger amount. If the waitlisted reservation costs more points than the booked reservation, the additional points will be used when the waitlist comes through. If those are not there when the waitlist works, the CM will cancel the waitlist. You may or may not be notified. (Probably, not).

Use the Modify feature to do this. That way, you won't lose the existing reservation until the new one is confirmed. If you cancel and then book, there's a chance you will end up with nothing.

Agreed. The modify feature has worked well for us several times, and only makes the actual changes if the new reservation is available for you.

A couple of other resorts were available this morning. They had a Lagoon view at the VGF - more points than I wanted to use this year, but it’s worth the splurge! No need to waitlist anything! Woo hoo!

Thanks again for the help everyone!

You are aware of the construction there? Just making sure. It won't affect the Villas building however the walking path to MK is closed. It could be open by September, but I could not get a sure answer from them on it. I could not get an definitive answer on when the lobby construction will be either.

Yes, thanks. Keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll be able to get most of the construction completed by September. Fortunately there are other MK options…. And if I have to take motorized transport instead of additional walking to start the day, I think I’m OK with that! 😁

The lobby and restaurants are definitely a bit of a worry for me. Hoping for the full experience, but if not, that gives us a good reason to plan another trip.

Yes you definitely have access to lots of options. I went through the same thing and decided to wait until it was all finished. For me personally if I am going to spend more points I want the full experience.

If BWV, BCV or Poly were available, I would definitely have gone with something else, but pickings were slim! 🫤. All the other arrangements are already booked so too difficult to make any changes. Hope you ind a great option for your trip!

I went with Kidani village which we love.

That was the original plan for me and my wife. But I realized my daughter just doesn’t appreciate animals yet - so proximity to the parks is definitely a higher priority. Next WDW trip will include a Kidani stay for sure. It’s been on my bucket list for a long time.
