We live outside Washington, DC, and I don't think HHI would be a terrible drive (we drive to Toronto 4x a year for comparison). Looking at visiting HHI, what would be the earliest in the spring (or latest in the winter) that you would recommend going?
Travelers would be DH (loves to snorkel/scuba, likes the pool, likes warmer temps), DD 10 (loves "pretzel water" and the waves, loves the pool, doesn't mind cold temps), and me (likes the beach to read, likes the pool to relax). We would like to be able to do some water tours (but not a deal breaker).
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd say April at the earliest if you plan to spend time sunbathing on the beach and in the water, but May would be better (before the last week of May when some schools start getting out for the summer). The air temperature is usually nice in April, but the ocean is still probably chilly, and sometimes April temperatures in the southeast can be cooler than I would want for a beach trip. We spent a few days at HHI last May the weekend before Memorial Day. The weather was really nice and the island did not seem crowded.

I can't help you on dates since we have been only during the summer, which may be hard to get 7 months out. But whenever you go, I'm sure you will LOVE it! Have a great time!

on the other side - late Nov - have been in Dec and went swimming - but the ocean water was a little on the cold side.

the pools at HH were fine (it is heated)

We're going the last of March/first week of April in 2011. Hilton Head has lots of bike paths so we plan on renting bikes - my plan is to pack sweatshirts in case it turns cool. We're also planning a day trip to Savannah - we like the on and off privileges of the Savannah trolley's and listening to the narrators.

I would think May would be a better bet on the weather for beach activities - and even then the water will probably be brisk.
