We have two villas reserved for arrival in 29 days. They have separate reservation numbers. We have found out that the other family occupying reservation # 2 won't be coming after all. I am heart sick. I haven't a clue as to what to do now. Should we try selling the reservation in the rent/trade board or isn't that allowed? If it is how do we do this? Could someone be kind enough to explain this procedure step by step? Also are there any other options open to us besides losing these points altogether? I am so confused I cannot even think straight today. Thanks for any help that can be given.

Since the reservation is less than 30 days from now, you may use the R/T Board to try to find someone to rent the reservation. Be sure to read all of the Sticky Threads at the top of that forum before you post.

If you cancel the reservation, the points will be returned to your account in "holding". that means they will expire at the end of the use year and cannot be banked. You may use them to make a reservation for a stay that is no more than 60 days away.

Sorry the other family can't use the reservation. Hope something else works out for you.

Wow, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Yes, you can offer the reservation for rent on the rent/trade board because it is within 30 days of check in date. You meet all the criteria to list the ressie (number of posts, Dis member for more than 6 months, etc). First you need to decide how much to ask for the reservation. Since it is so close to check in, I would recommend requiring full payment immediately. You would then call MS and change the names on the reservation.

If you cancel, the points will go into holding status as you are closer than 31 days to check in. Are you familiar with the restrictions on points in holding?

If you are a DVC Member with an existing reservation to rent

Once within 30 days of the arrival date, submit a thread, using the title "Reservation for Rent", to be validated by the board moderators. We would suggest including the dates, resort and villa-type in the title. The dates, resort, villa-type and arrival/departure dates are REQUIRED to be in the post itself, but we'd also suggest including as much of that information as possible in the title. Please also read the "Posting Rules:Required Reading" information for more detail.

Also are there any other options open to us besides losing these points altogether?

1) post a reservation for rent on the rent/trade board - if it doesn't work out, you can still cancel up to a day ahead of time and the pts will still be in holding status.

2) depending on your use year (which tells you when the holding pts expire) and your available time off from work - try using the holding pts to secure a reservation on short notice (60 days out).

3) if you can't use the pts, try renting a reservation booked with the holding pts (you would probably need to accept less than $10 per pt, though.)

4) just give away the reservation to a family member or friend who can use it.

traveling with family and friends can be frustrating since they often don't understand (and maybe a few don't care) about the bind their cancellation might put you in. sorry...

If you do post the reservation on the R/T Board, make sure you note that the reservation cannot be changed, no days added, no days subtracted, no change in resort, no change in villa size or location because undoubtedly, you will have people asking you to do all of that.

Good luck and sorry you learned the hard way about inviting others to go with you.

Wasn't member services closed today? They closed early on Tuesday. I would call and see if you could get a waiver because you could not contact them today. Your counter says 4 weeks plus 2 days = 30. Can't hurt to try.

Thank you all so much. We so appreciate the help you're giving. This is such a mess. The other family is actually our son's family and his marriage has fallen on bad times and may be breaking up. Our DDIL has decided she does not want to make this trip. Our DS wants us to wait to make any decisions until after the weekend as he's hoping she will change her mind. As someone else stated they don't realize we are under a time line and the clock is ticking. I too hope they can resolve their differences and we can all just go and have the happy time that we have been planning for the last several months. At least now, thanks to you all, I have more knowledge of what I need to do if that doesn't happen.
