Points in exchange for hotel room?

We are planning on buying a resale this year. At the same time we have a large family trip planned this December. We are renting points for a grand villa (hopefully), but just my core family will be there for a few days before the others arrive. I am debating if we should rent points for that part of the trip as well to wait and try to get a room after we close. But its mid December, so i assume all the rooms will be gone long before we are members, so that wont work. Can you use resale points towards hotel rooms? (I assume the conversion rate would suck). I read something about a discount? New to all this and trying to figure out what our options would be

You really need to book your December stay in January. Keep that in mind when you do close on a DVC purchase.

No, you cannot use resale points to trade into the hotel rooms - that is part of the Disney collection which cannot be used by new resale. The discount on DVC rooms is only if rooms are available and is 25% off of rack rate. You are correct the mid-Dec would be hard when you close but I'd say that it would be difficult now too. What I would probably do is reserve a cash room somewhere. Then when you close you can search for a room or waitlist of not available.

Unless you already have a Grand Villa rented with the extended family it is unlikely for this year anyway- Dec is basically booked up at this point.

Just got savannah grand villa this morning for our dates. AKL was our third choice (BLT and BW were booked solid), but we seem to get lucky renting so far. I guess I will go hunting for rented points for the first three nights now and look into buying a stripped contract that might save us a little since we don't need 2015 or early 2016 points. We are going on DCL in the spring and wont be back to WDW till fall 2016.

That would seem too short notice to plan for this Dec but sometimes things work out. If you've done all of your investigation and are ready to buy, proceed and see what happens. I would suggest not rushing through your process just to try to get part of this trip out of the new contract.
