We are going to NYC this weekend. I am attempting to count points as best as I can. I really wish that all chain restaurants would post their nutritional info, but they don't. So I need to estimate.

We are going to TGIFridays. I plan on having a salad, french onion soup and two bread sticks. I also plan on having half of a brownie obsession sundae.

I'm counting the breadsticks as 4 points a piece. I also think a whole dessert would be 20 points, so I'll take 10 for half. The soup has me in a tizzy. They have a bun like piece of bread in the soup. Since a hamburger bun is 3 points, I thought I'd take 2 for half of that. They put a lot of cheese on it so I thought 4 points for that. The broth and onions should be 0 or 1. So if I took 8 points for the soup, do you think I'm safe? Or am I over or under estimating in your opinion?

Please help me!!!! I've been obsesing over this for weeks. I want to reach goal by New Years.

An ounce of provolone is about 2.5 points, 2 ounces is 5 points, 3 ounces is 8 points.

French onion soup is usually made with gruyere, but some places will use provolone instead.

Gruyere cheese is 3 points for one ounce, 6 pts for 2 ounces and 9 pts for 3 ounces.

I'm thinking the soup will have 2-3 ounces of cheese at least, so you have to figure 5-9 pts for the cheese alone.

I would go with a higher point count for the soup, maybe 10 or 12? Better safe than sorry.

The WW site lists 1 cup of french onion soup au gratin as 7 points.

Maybe if you scrape most of the cheese off? ;)

Go earn some APs and enjoy yourself!!!!!!!

The above Points were figured without Fiber (value was not available)
so the actual Points MAY be lower as Fiber usually lowers the Point values.

Ok, Dotties Weight Loss Zone lists 1 cup of French Onion Soup Au Gratin as 6 points, so you were probably closer with the 8 points after all (figuring a restaurant like Fridays will pile on the cheese)

Enjoy! :)

1 oz of cheese is a lot too. I think I would up or down the points while I was eating it based on how much it felt like. I eat cheese a lot, and I cut it out in 1oz portions. I usually get 5 or 6 little slices from a block of cheese (like the cracker barrel cheese blocks - longer than wider).

The main thing with eating out, is to count as best you can. Don't make it so stressful, that you don't enjoy your vacation. The main thing is watching what you eat, moderating your portions etc. As long as you get close to what it should be, you should be ok.

I went back and looked at a French onion soup that I ate in Vegas while I was there, and I only counted it at 3 points. There wasn't much bread in it, and I counted the cheese as 2 points. I still lost that week. It was also a cup, and not a bowl.

Have fun! Just break apart everything you eat. You can do it. If it has a sauce, I usually add on 2-4 points for that, otherwise I don't really stress about what is in it that I don't know about. I just do the best I can.
