We have used a combination of banked/current/borrowed points over 2 contracts same UY for an coming trip (30 days out), We recently cancelled a couple of reservations which we thought we might attach to our main reservation so we are all set that way. My question is will MS automatically reallocate the points to ensure that we are using the banked and borrowed points first while leaving current year points still accessible to be banked?

It won't be automatically done. You have to either rebook online (modify the current one without making changes) or call and have MS do it.

ETA: Disregard, I missed the next trip was 30 days out.

Since you are less than 31 days away from check in any reallocation if points will apply holding status to the freed up points.

At this point, it’s too late to do that since whatever you free up will still expire at the end of the UY of your trip only be eligible for booking 60 days or less from check in.

Ok, I chatted with MS a bit ago and they advised that all available borrowed and banked points were used in my December reservation. Apparently I also had 14 banked points attached to a July 2023 reservation which they were somehow able to reallocate to my December trip despite being within 31 days. They didn't indicate that they were making a special exception for me or anything so that is good. I did have to cancel that July reservation and rebook though. In any event they advise that all of my banked borrowed points will be used up in December and all remaining points used in my July reservations are still bankable up until the window closes. Have to say for a newb the banking borrowing over multiple reservations can be a bit hard to follow.

Did you check your account to see if you have holding points? If you don’t, they did indeed give you an exception!!!

I don't see any points in holding so hopefully all is well! I guess I should have ensured any reallocation was made prior to 31 days out. Learn something new all the time. ty!

In OP's question, he mentions the trip is 30 days out but that they "recently" cancelled the other trips. If they canceled the others prior to the 31 day deadline, might that be the reason they didn't go into holding?

Nope, by re-allocating a trip that is 30 days or less from happening those points would have gone into holding.

Sort of like......

Cancelled Trips = 250 / 100 of those were banked or borrowed
Trip that is 30 days away = 100 current UY points
100 banked / borrowed replaces the 100 current UY points on trip, but since those current UY points are on a trip that is less than 31 days out they should have gone into holding.

Interesting. If it was a single contract would that make any difference? (Assuming the cancellation occurred prior to the 31 day deadline but no one called until after the deadline.). I.E would the system make any automatic changes when using a single contract?

No. It is the re-allocation (i.e. modification) of points within the 30 day mark that puts them in holding. If a trip is modified or cancelled within 30 days of a trip points go into holding. Doesn’t matter if that modification is simply reallocating points. At any rate, looks like MS made gave the OP some pixie dust.

Any modification to a trip less than 31 days prior to check in that changes the points will result in holding points for whatever is freed up.

In this case, the OP was given an exception when they freed up points and replaced them with banked or borrowed points in their account.

It's possible that they made an exception but they never said that they did. Had they mentioned that points would go into holding I would have left things alone as it wouldn't have really helped me. I may not be explaining what happened correctly idk. All cancellations were done pre 31 day mark. MS advised that banked/borrowed points are automatically used first however there was definitely something screwed up and I can't figure out or even explain clearly what happened. Bottomline all banked/borrowed points are being used up on a December reservation and all remaining points remain bankable so it worked out (kind of) in the end.

They wouldn’t necessarily mention it was overridden the holding penalty.

It doesn’t matter when a cancellation was done for the points you wanted reallocated.

It’s all about the current trip and if you were modifying that. If they needed to take banked or borrowed points from your account and swap them into the trip that was 30 days out to free up current points, then holding penalty should have applied.

The only piece is that maybe the system showed you 31 days out and that is the reason.

Banked/borrowed points do get used first but if you cancel a trip with them, the system won’t automatically reallocate into a current trip tot have booked. You have to do that yourself or call, like you did.

The great news is they did it for you. Just wanted others to be aware that any change to a trip within 31 days to use different or fewer points will result in holding status.

ETA: it is also possible that your banked/borrowed points were already on the trip you had booked and this bother really needed changing.
