Point Swaping, is this even possible?

Ok this might be a little tough to follow, but I need some help from some DVCr's that have been around awhile.

I am thinking about going to WDW for the week of Thanksgiving 2010 at OKW already I know this will be one I will want to make at 11 months. I would be using a few 2009 banked points, all 2010 and a few borrowed points from 2011.

Now lets say I make the reservation in Dec 2009, and then in July of 2010 I add on more points, I would get 2009 and 2010 as my use year is September.

So here is my question. could I take the new 2009 points (that would obviously be banked into 2010 immediately) and swap them out for 2010 points in the Thanksgiving reservation? They would all be OKW points, so it wouldn't be one resort for another, and I would think it would be a simple 1 for 1 swap but as I don't have any experience even TRYING this I have no idea.

The reason for this is though I know I could not get the borrowed points back to 2011, however I could bank the 2010 points to 2011 user year, to use between Sept 2011 - August 2012. Lots of thought involved and as strange as this may seem I actually enjoy all this convulated juggling to a point.

No and no. Points swaps as you describe are not possible, and you're past the banking period. Ahead of the banking deadline, and if there were availability for some days at either end, you could potentially use new points for some days and cancel the days that were using the older ones.

Officially, swapping points means canceling the old reservation and making a new one--a risky move at T-giving time when there's always a waitlist...

However, when there's plenty of availability, CMs do swap points (it's happened to me several times)...I don't know if they do the actual cancel/rebook scenario (they may)...but I have had current year points swapped several times...

As for banking, as far as I know there are only two scenarios where you can bank past your banking deadline. The first is w/an add-on bought through Disney...they have always allowed me to bank newly-acquired points (and one year I added on only 10 days prior to my use year end...they let me bank those points). The other is a "once-in-a-lifetime" adjustment which I've read about but never used...something along the lines of a death in the family or a natural disaster and Disney will make an adjustment, just once...

Hope this helps...

Yes, MS will likely allow you to do this - as long as the add-on is done thru DVC, you will be allowed to bank the additional points to use for that reservation and since the points will all be from the same contract/resort/Use Year you will be able to reallocate the points to free up the 2010 points and then bank those points into 2011 since you are still well within your banking deadline.

If the add-on is via resale, you won't likely be allowed to bank the points beyond the usual deadline.

Enjoy! :)

Point reallocations WITHOUT rebooking are allowed. Some CMs at MS seem to be more aware of this than others. Recently I had to cancel a reservation and an MS agent asked me if I wanted to bank the points into next year so that she could reallocate them for another reservation I have that uses next years points. I was rather surprised that she suggested this option because I have had other MS agents who don't seem to know what I am talking about. The key is that all of the points must be from the same resort if the 11 month window was used to book. I am not sure what happens if the reservation was booked after the 7 month window had opened.

Technically the rule as I understand it is that any change of points in a reservation is supposed to be a cancelation and rebooking. However, this has often not been the case, esp with points from the same home resort. Thus in reality you should be able to do this. It doesn't matter whether the points are resale or not (at least currently), it's just when the points are available that governs the issue but as Rob points out it may affecting your banking options. If you anticipate having points available at a later date, I'm not sure I'd borrow the points to start with and only reserve what you can with the points you have without borrowing starting with weekdays before weekends and that week, Wed on will likely be the most difficult.

Add one more caveat to the above. If you go to Disney and buy an add-on in July with a Sep use year, there is no certainty that you will get current points that started the prior September. This has varied over time as to what they allow and I recall times when, if you are that close to the end of your use year, they would allow an add-on only for points starting in the upcoming use year.
